Is there a difference between Rock and Pop Music?

Rock Fan? - Back then in the '80s sure...but these days I like my music mellow, beautiful classic melodies old and new, superb songs, tunes, always tunes, nothing too dark...I'm over that...

Or are they basically the same thing? Back in the sixties I grew up in, everyone talked about Pop, never Rock. That term seemed to come later when Pop came of age. My dad still calls all post-1955 electric music Pop like he did back in the sixties and seventies, as all dads did, when dads were dads and only perked up interest when a nice looking girl came on. Most of them hated Pop. So; what gives? Are Pop and Rock really so different, or just two aspects of the same music...just like domestic cats and wild cats are different and yet the same? What is the truth about Pop/Rock after all? Is Pop an old term that should have been dropped years ago? Let's talk Pop/Rock!

To me pop is music that is a combination of soft rock and r&b.Justin Timberlake would be a pop star. But rock is type of music Led Zepplin played. Hard hitting, great guitar runs and great drums music.

I agree with you about Led Zeppelin; they were the purest essence of Rock Music for better or worse.

I remember when I was about 13 in '69. Someone brought Led Zep II along to play; it had just been released. About four of us sat round the record player. I don't remember anyone speaking. The kid who'd bought the record was transfixed nodding his head with a vacant look on his rapt face. I remember the iconic album cover; the way we handled it, stared at it, possibly even caressed it. It was the future for us Rock kids. My fave album for ages was Led Zep I. I don't deny the extraordinary power of their music. But I'm ambivalent about it.

For better and better. There's no worst where Led Zepplin is concerned.

When I think of rock I think more of heavy metal. Rock to me doesn't really have a lot of vocals but more electric guitar or drums. When I think of pop I think of softer music and more vocals. Pop you would hear on the elevator but not so much rock.

Technically I think you're right. Rock originally grew out of British Blues bands turning their amps up high and kids in garages across the US and beyond trying to imitate them! So came Hard Rock, the first Rock. These days however, Rockologists call all artistic popular music: Rock!
