Last year my then 9 year old nephew was complaining that noone ever sends him any mail. I am always sending handmade cards to my mom and he seen some while visiting grandma. Well I decided he had to have a card. I made him a handmade Christmas card and came up with a corny poem for the inside. This is what I wrote:
~~~
Have a Very Merry
Not too Hairy,
Not at all Scary,
with an elf named Larry,
and a cranberry fairy,
with a reindeer named Gary
and a nose like a cherry,
not too much dairy,
Sorta Very Merry Chrsistmas Day!!
~~
Well that card just made his day. He called all the relatives and read it to them and even took it toschool to show his teacher. I had cut out a reindeer and a fairy and a plate of cookies and a glass of milk and one of those weird grass growing heads, etc., etc. to decorate the card with. I even used lots of glitter. The boy loved it.
Do you ever send silly letters or cards to the children in your life?
What a wonderful card that was Tess! It was most clever and I love how happy he was to receive it. And, yes, I do send grandchildren and children mail. I don't make New Year's Resolutions; but last year I made a determination to bring the art of letter writing back into my house again. I went out and bought some inexpensive stationery and made a point of making a pot of tea, sitting at my kitchen table with everything I needed in front of me, and writing one heart-felt letter a week. Sometimes to a relative, sometimes to a friend, sometimes to someone I didn't know serving in the war. I also cut out pictures, cartoons, recipes, or other things from magazines and papers that remind me of someone and put them into envelopes and mail them with a brief note. Email is great, but the feeling of going to the mail box and getting something that isn't a bill or junk is super! And that doesn't matter if you are a child or an adult. ~Donna
Oh Donna, How right you are. My mom lives alone and she does just as you said, makes a cup of tea, sits at her desk and pours her heart out in letters to distant relatives and a life long friend many miles away. I love to just sit and write out what I've been doing lately to my youngest daughter who's life is busy. Even though she is only 20 minutes away, she too says she enjoys moms rambling letters. I've even started payng some bills over the phone or on-line to save the stamp for a card or friendly letter to a loved one.
Wonderful! I used to have a box like that of cards and letters from my grandmother. They were misplaced during a move, I miss being able to visit her through those items. One thng I do have is a box of notes, cards and letters I recieved from my husband while we were courting! They are pricelsee to me. I even still have a card he sent me from Disneyland when we were at the just friends stage. It is wood!
That was a very creative poem. In fact, you should sell that one to hallmark. LOL. going back to the topic, I e-mail my 7 year old cousin who's in the U.S. from time to time but this Christmas I'm sending her a card. I hope she appreciates it like your nephew does. I'm not that creative when it comes to writing poems so I just might put a simple note on the card.
If you remember to include the childs name in your note and print she will be delighted. She can read and write her name by now and at that age they love reading their own name on something. It gives them ownership of the item, even a card or letter. You are sweet to keep in touch with your cousin.
I think a handmade card can brings more care or friendship to people than a e-mail.
That is so sweet of you to send your nephew a card like that. When my son was younger, my mom would send him different things in the mail. He looked forward to the mail coming. She would send him stickers, little cards that she would draw on and on every holiday, no matter how small she would send him a card with $2.00.
What an awesome idea, tess! I don't send cards to the children in my life, but I really don't know my neices and nephews all that well. You have inspired me, though, to try to do something like this more often. My daughters get cards from my aunt in another state, and they just love it! I make sure that they always "write" back. Usually they color her a picture since the oldest one is just barely writting so it makes sense now.
I have relatives that I see maybe once a year if that. And one of the ways I keep in touch is send silly cards I have made. I once sent a note written on a postcard I made by tracing one on a mac-n-cheese box and cutting it out. I drew a line down the middle of the back and wrote a note on the left side and the to and from addresses on the right side leaving room for a stamp. My little cousin loved it and I got one back from a pizza box. Hee Hee! talk about recycleing. Send something to that neice and nephew you barely know and before you know it you'll have a dialog going. One little second cousin in 2nd grade wrot to tell me she got an A on her spelling test. You'll be creating memories and some excitement in their lives and yours.
Hi, tess1960. I have bought all of my kids cards out of the store. But, I have never given them a handmade card before. I am sure that you son loved his card. That was so very sweet of you as his mother to do for him.
I know that he was so excited when he got this card. I love making cards too, and I may just start to make my kids cards too. It is cheaper in saving.
