Can someone help me

I am a terrible hoarder and over the years I have acquired a cupboard full of material of different types and colours. I would like to use them in quilts or some sort of handcraft. Any suggestions please?

How about using your scrap pieces to make a Scrappy Cabin? I found a great tutorial at http://mellyandme.typepad.com/melly_me/2007/03/scrappy_cabin_c.html They use scrap pieces of all different kinds and just make squares. Just keep making them and making them until you have enough for a quilt! I've made about 20 squares so far, but have lots of scraps left that I could make more! I just have to get on the ball and do it again! lol!

You should start with small projects. Quilted squares can be put together for a lap quilt. You can also make shoe bags. Where I live winter gets cold and slushy. We wear boots and carry shoes in shoe bags. I have a wonderful shoe bag which I got as a gift. It is black velvet outside and lined with another pretty material. You can also sew simple tote bags to take with you when you go grocery shopping. It saves on plastic bags and it is good for the environment. Then there are rag dolls and other stuffed animals and throw pillows. If you search the internet for crafts you can find wonderful free patterns. I went to a craft show and bought a simple reversible little dress for my new granddaughter. It is purple corduroy on one side and and a pretty floral on the other. It is sleeveless and has a wide neck. Very simple construction. Can be worn with a long sleeve shirt in cold weather and without a tee shirt in the summer. A friend of mine also takes material with her to her church group. They sew simple quilts and send them to church groups in developing countries. Wishing you lots of fun and good creations. As I said start simple and you will enjoy it. P.S. I am making a sock monkey for my little grand daughter. I found a very simple pattern on the internet. At the craft show those sock monkeys were anywhere from $40 to $ 60. I can make one with a pair of work socks from the dollar store for $5.

Thank you for your ideas they are most appreciated. I have been sewing for many years and have quite a collection of different crafts that i have completed including quite a few quilts . A lot of my cupboard full of material is leftovers from other projects but they are to good to throw out. I have given bags full of material to the local schools and child care facilities .

If you like log cabin quilts, try the courthouse step variation. Instead of going around the square, you do the left side, then the right side, then the top, then the bottom. repeat. Also, pinwheels are great for scrap quilts. All you need to do is cut your scraps into squares of the same size. Then lay two squares on top of each other right side together. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to another. Sew 1/4 inch either of that line. Cut along the line. You know have two half square triangles. Lay out accordingly to make pinwheels.

Pillow cases are wonderful if the material is good for that. Quilted window covers for night are a big thing to help conserve energy and keep the house warm up here. Appliques for clothes that have stains can be really cool. If any have pictures, cutting them out, putting back to back, sewing around, turning inside out, stuffing with something and finish sewing, then put string or yarn to make ornaments is really cool. There are lots of fun things to do livin rural. Hope you have a good time, winter, where I live is coming, and a good time to do lots of craft projects. Take care
