RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (There are other definitions too, but I won't go into that). To put it simple, content comes to you instead of you going in search of it.
Let me make it clear. For example, you like BBC, CNN and CNBC news. What would you do? You will visit BBC, read the articles, close it. Next, open CNN read and close it. Same goes with CNBC.
Instead, you can use RSS to send information to you from all these sources to one place. In your blog, you can have three locations reserved for BBC, CNN and CNBC. You subscribe to their RSS. Now, when you open your blog you will see the latest news from all three sites at one place. Gets easier right.
Similar goes to your blog. If I like your content, I will use RSS to fetch content from your site.
Hope that makes things clear. Thanks.

I think even for sites that don't have RSS feeds, there are online sites that can help to generate a RSS feed...
