How long do you leave raw meat in your refrigerator?

Most times I try to put all raw meat in the freezer the minute it comes into the house. For some reason, I don't trust our refrigerator to keep meats cold enough. Ironic, considering that the meats at the grocery store are kept in a refrigerated section and not actually frozen. That's why the chicken is always so plump and the steaks are so tender when you buy them.
But, last night, I was so tired that I left the chicken and beef in the refrigerator on the top shelf. It should be alright, until I can wrap it up for later use. How long do you leave raw chicken, fish or beef in your refrigerator before you store it in your freezer? Do you think that you can get sick from keeping raw meats in your refrigerator for too long?

Maybe a day after that I either cook it or wrap it up to put into the freezer. I know it can make you sick after being out of the freezer for to long. I have never experienced it but I have worked in to many fast food places to know better.

I usually freeze all raw meat except what I plan on using within two days. I never leave it in the fridge more than 2 or 3 days.
