Does your cat try to clean you?

Our new kitten loves to jump in my lap. And, when she does she starts trying to clean me. First she starts with a hand and then trys to clean my face. Of course, I don't let her get away with it, because I don't want to end up smelling like cat saliva. And, I've always wondered why do cats do that sort of thing? It's not as if I need a second bath for the day. Is that some type of social behavior. Sort of like when a monkey preens another monkey's fur. It's about being accepted into the group. What do you think?

My gray striped cat, Eidolo (thanks to a MyLot member from a reply of the red sky last month), loves to do the same thing. Whenever I wake up, in bed in my room, or in the living room, Eidolo follows me around, purring a lot in affection, sometimes jumps onto my bed, finds my hands, and licks them for long periods of time. Even in the living room the kitten follows me there, and I lower my hand, and licks it for a long period of time. Felt good as it tried to "clean" me. Perhaps it's the cat's way of saying it loves me.

My cat tries to clean me all the time. Sometimes I protest and tell him the "Skin Bar" is closed.

My cat doesn't try to lick me just mainly rub up against me like most cats do or else sit or stand exactly where I'm trying to do something. My brothers cat on the other hand is an unusual one. It loves to suck things and has done this since it was a kitten. He's suck on your clothes or skin it doens't matter. We're not sure why he does this but someone said maybe it was because he was taken away from his mother too early.

haha yes my cats "clean" me as well. I think it is a sign of affection. In the animal world they clean each other. Also, our skin is salty so they like the taste of it. I don't really mind I let my cat lick me. ALthough once she licked my eyelid and that creeped me out.

I've got one that does it all the time. He loves to do it. I don't mind it in small doses. I don't want to get on to him, because in his mind, he's showing me that he loves me. But I can't stand to let him do it for long. I'll pick him up and go put him next to another cat and he can clean that cat.

Both our cats do this, and I don't think it is something they will grow out of either. In fact, I think it has gotten worse since they turned two! Before just the male cat did it, now they both do it. Same thing with the cat "massages", the female use to only do it to me, not they both give me massages - especially when they want something!
