To blog or not to blog, that is the question

Why do people write blogs when most of them are unspeakably tedious, badly written, totally lacking in imagination and merely an exercise in smug self indulgence? all the best urban

Dear me, Urban, what brought this tirade on? LOL I understand what you're saying, and certainly many blogs are tedious and almost unreadable. But for the people involved they obviously provide an outlet for some aspect of their creativity, and that's okay. The thing is, people don't actually need to read them - that's if they happen to come across them in the first place. I won't give you my blogs' addresses....in case you think they're equally badly written, tedious, lacking in imagination and merely smug self-indulgent exercises!!

To late, you already did! Mwhahahahahahaha! Actually, I liked your blog about the collective terms for animals - important stuff that. Yes, maybe they are an outlet for creativity but in many cases it's hardly a flood! all the best urban

I agree. I think that in general the blogs that people write just for their own sake are fine. Let them get on with it. I write mine with readers in mind, so I aim not to let them be too personal, introspective and so on. I like to have an audience, and if possible, keep it!

Well it is given to the taste of the reader. It may be that you find it horribly written and smug but another reader is entertained by it. A blog is a person's personal soap box and like it or not, that is pretty much what it is for. There are many of them out there I find horribly written and terribly annoying to read, so I stop reading once my eyes have rolled once. I just shrug it off and consider that it helped someone somewhere maybe.... Likely only the writer. Anyway it is an outlet. Who doesn't need some sort of outlet these days? P.S. I am also not giving my blog out because I am sure you would hate it and my grasp of English language would probably annoy the crap out of you.

Blogs are like journals and usually do not require perfect grammar to keep. Sometimes, I think we can get caught up on trivalties which life so very burdenson: wouldn't you agree? If we are focusing on the grammatical structure of the sentences people compose, more then likely we will miss the message they are trying to get across. Blogs are just another way that people express themselves.

To some extent, pedantic attention to grammar may have the effect your describe but attention to grammar and word choice is important, thinks I. Why, well, for two reasons, one aesthetic, the other practical. Clarity of language aids clarity of thought and clarity of interpretation in the reader. Poor grammatical structure can hide poor logical structure, disguising errors of reasoning, equivocation and ambiguity that might over wise be apparent. Of course, as Aristotle notes, the degree of accuracy desirable should be governed by the subject matter and in many a blog, therefore, only minimal accuracy of expression need by aimed for on these grounds. However, a well constructed sentence, a finely expounded point of view are elegant and that is a virtue to be pursued for its own sake. all the best urban
