one that is prepaid? I am looking to get a new phone and I don't really know if I want to be committed to a contract or not. What do you think is the benefit of a contract vs prepaid service?

In our area, we dont have a choice. The only cell phone that will work in our area is Cellular One. We do have to sign a two year contract but we get a phone for one cent. It is a good company. My cell phone just tore up and I needed a new one. They gave me the option of purchaseing one or signing another 2 year contract. I opted to sign the contract. The cost of the phone was over $200. Too much for our budget.

Ok, I understand. But if you could choose from prepaid and signing a contract, which would you rather do?

I think you would have to weigh your options and see which one you could live with. I have one daughter that has a tracfone. No contract required and it is prepaid. She only uses it when she travels for safety reasons. So it is perfect for her. My other daughter uses a cell phone that was contract. She uses it to make all her long distance calls. She makes alot of long distance calls. So a prepaid would be too much money for her. My husband and I have cell phones and we do have contract. I am sick and my husband is afraid to let me even go shopping by myself. When we go shopping, we both make sure that we have our cell phones. It keeps him from worrying about me. I hope this helps you somewhat

I have come to the conclusion that getting a cellphone (we call them mobiles in the UK) with NO contract is much better. My contract runs out in February 2008 and I WON'T be renewing, it is costing me a fortune every month for the rental alone, yes I do get a lot of free calls and texts but to be honest I don't use them, so it's a waste. I much rather pay as I go! It will also save me a fortune and I hate being tied to contracts too, they are so binding and you can't get out of them!

I've never really liked contracts either, but I have always had one for my cell phones. Don't know why. It looks like prepaid is the way to go so that I can pay for what I use not for what they think I've used. Thanks!!

Check out cricket. Unlimited everything. No contract. You get a bill every month but you can cancel any time.

Cricket is not yet in my area. It's close, but not in my town. I wish it was. I will definetely check into them again when they get to my area. Thanks a lot!!

If you think you will be still be in the country within the contract period and not migrating elsewhere...then contract would be better... This is because with contract, the new phone is usually a lot cheaper than the same one without contract...But of course, it also depends which plan you subscribe to, depending on your usage... For prepaid, there's no good deals for phone and that you still pay a flat rate for usage.... Its better to get a cheaper phone if the contract plan is about the same as the prepaid...so its still up to what telco you have at your side and what they are offering

I never thought about that. I will look into probably getting a phone on ebay so that it won't cost as much as it would if I got it from the telco itself. Appreciate your response.

It really depends on a few factors. The 2 main ones are: How many minnutes a month do you need? And how much can you afford? Prepaid plans are more expesnive but they are much more flexible and wont ruin your credit if you can't pay your bill or you decide that you really don't need a phone. There is no contract to buy out of. The 2 best pre paid phone are net 10 they charge 10 cents a minnute no matter what. So a 30 dollar card will get you 300 minnutes.. remember with this phone there are no night or weekend minnutes. The next one is virgin mobile.. you can still have a monthly plan and buy a prepaid phone card to pay every month.. there is no contract or obligation with this phone. For $45 bucks after taxes we got 400 anytime minnutes and 2000 night and weekend minnutes starting after 7. For $40 after taxes we got 300 anytime minnutes and 2000 night and weekend minnutes starting after 7. Not too bad for no commitment if you ask me!
