Poinsettia Plant

Poinsettia Plant - Red Poinsettia Plant
Canada
December 2, 2007 12:11am CST
Is there anyone out there that feels the same way I do? I absolutely hate poinsettia plants. I always thought they were poisonous but they said on TV yesterday that they are not at all poisonous. I still don't like them at all.

I know some people say that but they are REALLY poisonous... they are in the Euphorbia Genus and as such have a toxic milky sap. One species of Euphorbia (snow on the mountain) is so toxic that bees that visit the flower produce toxic honey *shudder* (this information comes to you via my teen son who is learned in plants) I do like the looks of poinsettia, though, I do not have them around the house due to their toxicity. I think it is interesting that the colorful part is not the flower but modified leaves (bracts) the actual flowers are the small yellow "things" in the center just like Dogwood blossoms. my son scares me he tells me that the japanese yew plant can kill you with the poison from one leaf!!! and a peanut sized piece of water hemlock stem is enough to kill you!

Thanks for the lesson Modestah! I never knew that the red part were actually the leaves and the round yellow parts were the actual flowers! Learn something new each day I guess!

With me it is more of a love/hate relationship. At times I think they really are very pretty, but they have a goofy name and I dislike the idea that they are too tied to just one holiday. I never tire of Amaryllis though, even though they are somewhat seasonal, too.

Oh I agree about the Amarylis and I love their name, and love the tall stately stems and lovely large blossoms - they are so statuest! plus they are a "Mary" flower :) I do not like the pointsettia that are spray painted blue or other colors and glittered.... I think they are tacky.

Oops! Ahem, I like them. I like the different kinds and colors. I have almost figured out how to carry them over for years. Last year a single red one was the only Christmas decoration we had since we dont have room for decorations here. How about Christmas cactus? Do you like them?

I love Christmas cactus, they're a little messy when the ends all fall on the floor but they are a beautiful plant.

Poinsetta Tree - This tree is in San Diego, it is a Poinsettia Christmas Tree, how pretty.
I love Poinsettia's Grandmaof2, they just make me feel happy during the holidays. Look up the Poinsettia on wikipedia.com and read what they say about poinsettia's and people with latex allergies. We learn something new each day! Quite interesting. Now, I have to find another pretty plant comment picture to send you for the holidays! Isn't the tree great? Thanks for the great question...take care!

Well I didn't know there was such a thing as a poinsettia tree. I think it looks better than the plants. Thank You for your comments.

Hi Hun! I think that poinsettias are really pretty, BUT with a dog and a 18 month old in the house that puts EVERYTHING in her mouth I'm not willing to risk it! I have never really liked one enough to actually go by one, unless it has been as a Christmas gift, that's about it! I buy one every year for a friend of mine that is crazy over poinsettias! Hello my friend...we haven't chatted in awhile and hope things are going better with you and your loved ones. Sorry I cannot say that I hate or dislike poinsettia plants because I associate them with Christmas, my Mom and how much they represent the season to me. My Mom's birthday was Christmas day and she always had poinsettias in the house. So I love them because they remind me of her and how much I miss her. She passed away 4 years ago in April of 2008. I guess I will love this plant as long as I live and our house is full of them. The add so much color during the colder, shorter days in Canada and are a lovely contrast to the organic way that I decorate our home. Lots of acorn wreathes and 'au natural' pieces with not so much glitter is my preference. So the bright red of the flowers is a great accent for our tastes. With having 5 cats and 2 dogs in the house our home is now filled with silk ones rather than the real ones because the animals eat the live ones...but poinsettias and my Mom are Christmas memories I will never give up. Curious though...what makes you hate them? There must be some association somewhere...most of us do not develop our likes and dislikes without a reason. Anyway that is the joy of life we are all entitled to our preferences...isn't it great that our Creator gave us the right to choose...I am thankful for that every day! Anyhow good to be back in touch...best regards to you for the holidays and in the coming year. Raia

Thank You very much for sharing this with me. I guess the bad news is you will never forget your Mom and it will hurt forever, but you have turned all that into pleasant memories. There are few people that dislike poinsettias and I guess I'm just one of the few. Honestly I really don't know why.

When I lived in California I have them in my side yard. They were huge and had a woody stem from living so long..I did love them. When I would go around the side their little faces would smile at me and I always felt cheered by them. So no I don't hate them.... xoxoxox

I think that they are ok. I don't think they are the most beautiful plant, but for some reason they are connected with the Christmas holidays and I do like the color red! So, I guess they are ok with me.

I actually love pointsettia plants but they are highly poisonous especially to pets. Even though years and years ago, I had kitties (still do)..I would sometimes have those plants so I could use in photographic set-ups I did but you can't believe how careful I was..never kept the plant anywhere where the cats could get at it. Now I never get one Here's a listing of a lot of plants poisonous to pets http://www.dogpack.com/health/poisonplants.htm http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html

Well this was interesting. Just goes to show what they said on TV is crap. They said the poinsettia is not poisonous, it clearly states here that YES indeed they are. Thank You.

well there's must be something in it that you don't like about poinsettia... here in the phils., it only blooms in november to december when its cold... whenever folks see its very red petals, the season for christmas is near. well, poisonous or not, like it or not, for sure it was made for some great reason... we don't know yet for now :-)

They are toxic to all animals. I have been given poinsettas in the past, but I have both cats and dogs and all of them like to eat plants. I do keep a few cat friendly plants such as wheat grass and catnip for them to chew on, but I'd never bring a poinsetta into my house. When I was given one, I donated it to the nursing home next door to where I used to work. I told them to let me know who doesn't have have many visitors and I'd hand deliver it and brighten someone's day. I wound up making a wonderful friend out of a very sweet lady until she passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 103. She outlived both of her kids and her husband.

I quite like the Poinsettia Plant, and here in Australia at this time of year they are very popular as a Christmas table decoration (I suppose because they are green and red). I see in one of the responses that they are supposed to be poisonous yet you heard it on TV that they are not. I guess I will have to research the plany and find out definitely, as I have two small dogs and a very young grandchild at home. If they are poisonous, I wouldn't have one in the house, obviously. Good discussion Grandmaof2, and Happy Birthday again!

I like poinsettia plants and when I get a chance I buy them when they are in season. To me it makes xmas feel more beautiful with a lot of Poinsettia plants around the house.
