Know why we celebrating the first of Advent?

Today we are about to light the first light of four in Advent. I for one are well aware of why we do this every year before Christmas. But how many of us are? I am wondering. This is also a tradition, we clean up at homes, put up the 7 lights in the windows, showing the way with a lightening star in the windows. A way to remember of Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. The stories we tell about him being born from the bible. I usually was in a curie singing in churches this day, to day I no longer do due to the time I no longer have, to enjoy this, I must say I do miss it. And the church are never so full of people as the day of today. Do we really remember why celebrating Christmas and Advent, or have we forgotten it due to all the gift shopping?
