I don't know. We all buy presents for people we know and love but it became something that we have to do and little bit stressful unfortunately.

I think some people become happier than normal when it is Christmas time. They enjoy shopping for presents, putting up a Christmas tree along with other decorations and seeing family. Other people become stressed at Christmas time, perhaps getting tired out or annoyed with Christmas shopping or having a poor temper with members of their family. I used to live next door to a divorce lawyer. He got very busy at Christmas, New Year and shortly afterwards. This he said was due to married couples having enough of each other and not having a nice time with in laws visiting. Many couples separated, arranged to get divorced or had child custody issues.

Yeah, I agree. It got so stressful for everyone in my family that now we each just buy one 'group gift' which we put in a pile in the middle of the floor on Christmas Eve. Then we draw numbers and take turns going to the pile and selecting a gift to open while everyone watches. There is plenty of spiked eggnog and shouting and laughter, and once all the gifts have been opened then there is swapping and bartering and more laughter. On Christmas day we just feast and play games and drink more eggnog. (And of course the young ones open the presents left by Santa!) This practice has not only removed the stress from our Christmas holidays but has actually increased the fun we have!

Not sure. Yes, the atmosphere is special and very emotional, yes, we are predisposed to thibk more about our families, friends and even about charity. But who knows...sometimes this is just because of the traditions and we do the things formally.

I think that people are more able to think about others this time of year... the reminders are everywhere! We are usually too wrapped up in what in going on with our own lives and families... the holidays give us more opportunity to be generous and helpful. That's the Christmas spirit at work!

I don't think people become better on the Christmas holidays. I think they become worse, because like you say they are stressed and feel obligated to do things they really don't want to do. This year my husband and I agreed that we will not be doing anything we don't want to do and will not be buying gifts for anyone except for our kids. Usually the stress starts for us right around Thanksgiving, but this has actually been a very pleasant couple of weeks since we took the obligations out of the holidays.
