this is the story about what went down with International Academy of Design and Technology. I started in 2003. I heard an ad on the radio about this new Justice Technology degree program at the school. So I went down there and checked it out. They told me it was a 2 year deal and we would get an Associates Degree. Cool.
So I start. Maybe halfway into it they tell us that the program has to be okayed by the Department of Education. They have to come inspect the curriculum, etc. So they never come and blah blah. So when we graduate this still isnt' resolved and we all get certificates. Now I didn't pay $30K + to get a certificate. So they assure us that once the program is all okayed we will get our degrees. Well about a year goes by and I don't hear anything so I had become good friends with that programs director and we emailed back and forth. He tells me that at first the DE did okay with program in feb 06 but all students enrolled before that were not eligible to get the degree.
At this point I am so, so pissed. So I called the DE myself and they tell me there had been tons of complaints about this school in the past and they should have never advertised the program as a degree until it was okay to do so. That to me is breach of contract. So more time goes by then finally they worked out a deal that we could take free online classes. I start doing those. Then my friend calls me and he says you don't have to do the cds , just sign this piece of paper. So I sign it and I get an amil from him saying Congrats- get your degree at end of Oct 07. Guess what? Never got it. I shouldnt' be liable for paying my student loans back if I never got my degree through no fault of my own?
Any advice would be great on this matter!!

Oh yes you were definitely wronged on this one... twice. And that's the thing you brought up too, you shouldn't have to settle student loans if the school can't fork over your certificate/degree. I don't know if you could get a lawyer on this, but maybe contact other students, pool your resources and file a grievance that way. I think you could also try taking it up with the Department of Education (federal and state, I think both work in cases like this).
Unfortunately I cannot be of anymore help right now Angel. If I do think of something I'll get it to you. But I think I got my ideas down.
Sorry about your education and degree situation. At least you have the experience and can warn others about this. I'd definitely do that to as many people as possible! That's also something you could do.

Well I got my degree in the mail last week so now I am out of options. I talked to a few attorneys as well and they said that unless me not having my degree hindered me from getting a job then there's really nothing I can do. But thanks for replying to my post.

No prob Angel... sorry you couldn't do anything else about it. At least you have the degree and can hopefully move forward with your professional life. Good luck!
