Why do cats like to play/sleep/sit in boxes so much?

Our cat doesn't do that. However, he is about to drive me crazy climbing the Christmas tree and playing with the lights that I have hanging up. I don't really know how to break him of it either.

You could try spraying him with a water bottle when he gets in the tree. Cats hate that, but I never do it to mine because I feel too bad :( Luckily she doesn't really get into anything she shouldn't although recently she's been opening the cupboard below our sink where we keep our chemicals so I guess I gotta move those!

"However, he is about to drive me crazy climbing the Christmas tree" LOL last yr we had a real tree for the first time and ALL our cats were interested in it but it was Ostara, my youngest kitty who would do that...Until she pulled the entire tree down and scared the crap out of herself LOL

I have often wondered this, our meggy does exactly the same, as soon as a box arrives she has to sniff it out and start nesting. I always thought that cats nest before giving birth, but how wrong I was, our cat is 13 and she's still got her nose in boxes and if there's a box around you can bet your bottom dollar she'll be in there snuggled up! Once we bought her a special bed from the Pet Store thinking she'd love it, nice and warm and furry ideal for her, but NO, she was more interested in the box that came with it!

When Moomin decided to adopt us as his family I made him a cat bed using a box with an old pillow and a piece of sheepskin and he loves it. I guess he feels secure in their.

I think they love the idea of being in a safe place .They feel secure when surrounded around. Also they must feel the warmth

I have no clue, but its the same with bags and dresser drawers....Mine drive me crazy with getting stuck in the dresser...Seems that I have really dumb cats, but they are cute. Any box, bag, drawer, cupboard that is open is fair game to them. I wish I was that easily entertained!

The same can be said for children, you spend a fortune on toys and they would rather play with the box ... ???? One of life's mysteries ....lol..

I have no idea really.I have 2 cats and i really love them and i have a small dog..I think cats are a little weird at times. They are very independent and they also have a temper when they do not get their way.My cat was on the recliner in my living room and my friend came in a shooed the cat off the recliner so she could sit down , and he got so mad, he started circling her and giving her th evil eyes.My sisters cat, is so spoiled rotten and if he does not get his tuna at 4:00 shape, he will get mad a fall in the floor. If you have a dog you are their owner , if you have a cat they try to be your owner..Cats like to hide and pounce on things so i think that they feel they are hiding when they are in boxes...although i do love my cats they can be weird at times...

Young cats and kittens tend to be playful and so view a box as an opportunity for fun. They enjoy the feeling on their claws of scratching to box. It might be nice and comfortable inside the box so it could be comfortable to sleep inside it. Cats like to sit on things and so a box might be an ideal height. When I was a child we had two cats. Sylvester used to love playing in a box. He would roll on his back and kick his paws into it. He would chew the corners of it. Sometimes he would rub lovingly on the box. Tucker used to like sleeping in a round ball inside a box. It would make her so happy she would purr quite contently.

i have no idea, but it's pretty cute. when i lived at home we had 3cats. all three of them loved to play with them. one of them even had a thing for chewing up the corners of them for some reason. i live with my boyfriend now and we recently got a 2-3month old cat, he has yet to show any real attention to this empty pop box we have sitting in our kitchen waiting for the next garbage day to roll around. we also have about 4boxes in our extra bedroom that we had used to move stuff in here about a month ago and he hasn't really shown any interest yet in those either.
