The internet is certainly addictive but is it sufficiently soporific to prevent people changing those things that should be changed?

To me television is one opiate: in so many homes you find the tv is going constantly. It's rather like having a fire going when it's cold. TV, in an odd way, keeps you warm.
On the other hand, you might consider retail therapy as an opium of the people. Malls and more malls, and all of them selling the same stuff, yet people throng them. Most of the stuff isn't 'needed' but people want to go out and spend, as though they had an endless supply of money.
