Marx claimed religion was the opium of the people but like he was about many things Marx was wrong. What do you consider the present day Opium of the People. Not counting drugs of course. all the best urban

To me television is one opiate: in so many homes you find the tv is going constantly. It's rather like having a fire going when it's cold. TV, in an odd way, keeps you warm. On the other hand, you might consider retail therapy as an opium of the people. Malls and more malls, and all of them selling the same stuff, yet people throng them. Most of the stuff isn't 'needed' but people want to go out and spend, as though they had an endless supply of money.
