I guess the whole concept of what is unreal and what is truth is the spell binding and of cource the new technolgy of using multiple cameras to capture a single shot and stop it in action had become a hit combination.

What I believe is so great about the matrix is the fact that it had so many philisophical thoughts put into it. Fore example, during the first movie, there was an example of platoe's allegory of the caves. When Neo had to chose whether or not he would take the red pill or not. That was a direct simile of that. Also with the matrix comes tons of eye candy.

The storyline (of the original especially) is excellent. Its not just another action movie, nor is it another dystopia piece. There is MUCH more to it and for various things too. There are anime references, stories, philsophical thought/examples, ideas and thoughts of existance analyzed. The Mind-body problem is explored somewhat. Also some draw comparisons to the person in the cave example when talking about the "Matrix" itself. That, and also an eternal question of life, is everything around you "real"? The idea of Cogito Ergo Sum (I think therefore I am) is noted. Neo realizes he is a person and real, but once the "Matrix" is revealed the self (and more importantly) the reality/world are in question. There is also the history of the "Matrix". Smith (and then the Architect) reveals it and it gives an instance of how humans react to reality. Basically, humans didn't except a "perfect" human world(Heaven/Afterlife question), but also didn't except a very grim world either(Hell/Hell on Earth supposition). Ideas of technology and real existance are also explored (though more so in Second Renaissance). The various types of AI, robots or the programs inside the Matrix all have different "lives"/roles, perspectives even "personalities". On the other hand, how AI and human interaction might be, that's considered too. The raw technology in this is noted (more in Second Renaissance) and how the AI grows or could grow to surpass humanity. And overall, the action and everything else does make the movies great.

I think the movie Matrix was great number one because of the great special effects, and two because of the great story line. The special effects were cutting edge in hollywood at the time. I saw a show about the making of the Matrix and the director and producers talked about how they had to invent new technologies to get thier vision correct. The same story is true with the original Star Wars movie by George Lucas. He had to invent new technologies as well. I wonder if there is a parralel in creating new tech for a movie and untold success in it. Anyway the special effects in Matrix were awesome! The storyline for Matrix and the way it was presented was and is fresh and cutting edge. What a great idea to come up with for a movie! If you haven't seen Matrix its about machines taking over the world and humans are grown, harvested and kept alive in pods to be used for their energy. A large computer is hooked to all humans brains and plays "what is reality". Kinda hard to explain I guess,...but if you haven't seen it, it is a must see, 5 stars. The tight fitting black vinyl suit on Trinity isn't bad either.

what do i think is great about the matrix? well, effects of course. as for the philosophy, well, i can say it has been discussed already centuries earlier. matrix's main problem is the problem of certitude: what is real? we all know that people like saint augustine and rene descartes have dealt with this problem already. ;D
