I was watching a current affair show earlier about breastfeeding children and to what age is appropriate, and it got me thinking here...... I breast feed my son untill he was 10 months and my daughter untill 6 months but had to stop with both because I got sick and had to take medication which would interfere with them.... I always said I would untill my child gets teeth or up to a year I would breastfeed them. I find it a little disturbing that a older child would still be feeding on the breast. I couldn't imagine my children doing it now at 3 and 4.5.... I think it would have a phycological and social impacted on them in later life... I want to know your thoughts and own experiences with breastfeeding your children. What age do you think it is appropriate to breastfeed up to?

Its totally up to the individual, there is no set age or rule that it should stop,Its the most natural thing in life... I had to stop at 6 weeks and 3 months due to circumstances...I think though after a year it just dosnt look appropriate, it looks quite ugly especially with 2/3 years + if they want milk you can always express it into a bottle...

my thoughts exactly, express it. It doesn't look appropriate to be feeding a school age child....

i think that upto 1 yr its ok. beyond that it is not acceptable. it is good for babies but not after certain age. anything upto 1 yr is ok as i guess.

I think it should be at the age of 1½ year max. I really don’t know coz my own kid was on formula milk from 1 months as I had to attend office. Many kids I see are on the milk till 4/5 years but that is awful. It’s a great strain on the mom’s freedom too.

You would feel like a cow.lol.. Maybe they see it as a cheap alternative to buying milk..... I agree with you 1½ year and then at least start to wean them off......

Personally, I'd say 6-8 months and I'd be working hard with them to get used to a sippy cup to help get them off the nipple quicker. I've seen kids as old as 5 still nursing and it really is weird to see a kid old enough to walk, talk, and so on hanging on to their mom's boob for lunch. Recently, I came across a this video. I think I'd be running for the door if I was the girlfriend. I hope the link comes through allright. http://youtube.com/watch?v=l8orUaCJ0GY MERRY CHRISTMAS!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Appropriate? When they get teeth. Disgusting? I was at a restaurant a few years back. This kid, probably 5 or 6 came up to his mother and announced so the whole restaurant could hear that he wanted his milkies. Mom flipped up her top, scooted towards the edge of the seat and that kid latched on, standing up, and mom continued talking to her friend across the table, oblivious to the fact she had a kindergartner attached to her like a barnacle on a boat bottom.

My daughter had teeth at 6 weeks, there is no reason why teeth should be the deciding factor. Even infants can be taught not to bite. You witnessed a beautiful, natural act and you found it revolting. I'm sorry you feel that way.
