The dollar sign ($) was designed in 1788 by Oliver Pollock of New Orleans. He was a business man. He used a combination of Spanish money symbols to come up with the design. Money in the past used to be called Jochimsthalers. A mining hole in the mountains of Bohemia produced so much silver, it became the official source of coinage for the entire Roman Empire. The mine was in a valley called Joachimsthal. The coins that were commonly used were then refered to as Jochimsthalers. Overtime, the name was shorted to "Talers". As the money became more and more popular, the Americans pronunciation became slanged. As times goes by, it gradually became "Dollar". I don't know about the last part though. If anyone has a better explanation, I am more than happy if you could correct me. ;)

haha this is quite interesting. i never knew the history behind the dollar sign. maybe you can also find the history behind the pound sign. i like it cos it looks very curly and more artistic than the S with a stroke through it.

Heh heh... more artistic than the dollar sign eh? Heh heh... interesting. I never really pay attention to it. I just recognize it as the pound sign and that is it. Heh heh heh.... ;)

Wow. Thanks for the history lesson =P I've never given this topic much thought. Now I learn something new and I can show off this knowledge to my friends =P I am not sure about the last part too but what you have explained sounds logical enough. Thanks for the information.
