Do you have trouble swallowing pills?

I was recently talking to a friend who said she couldn't take vitamins because she had trouble swallowing pills. I have taken SO many for SO long that I have figured out the easiest way... Take a drink of plain water first, and swallow it. Put the pill in your mouth, take another drink, make sure the pill is all wet, tilt your head DOWN and swallow... pills float, and tilting your head down takes it closer to the throat. This worked extremely well for my Pop who, at 84 and with terminal cancer, had to start taking pain pills. He had rarely ever taken medication... he even took chewable baby aspirin for his heart. After a few times, he was an old pro and had no trouble at all. Its worth a try!

I have such a hard time swallowing pills, which is insane because I've taking pills since I was old enough to remember, every day of my life. But I just can't do it normal, lol. I have to put some drink in my mouth, then with the drink still in my mouth I squeeze the pill through my lips (so the juice or water won't spill out) and swallow fast. Then I have to drink a lot more and sometimes hard glups of something because the pill will get stuck in my throat. If a pill touches my tongue or throat bare, I'll gag like crazy. Anyone who's ever watched me take a pill for the first time laughs for like 5 minutes straight while I stand there with a blank look, lol. I try not to take pills infront of boyfriends or anyone else who I don't want to spoil my "big girl" image with. The whole ordeal makes me feel 5, lol.

Doing it the way I am now, I can take even 6 at a time!! I take all my supplements with my pain meds in the afternoon, and this includes a big flax seed oil capsule! I have that same kind of gag reflex, though maybe not quite to the extent of yours!LOL! I also eat something after, like the last few bites of my lunch, to make sure they're all the way down... I hate that burning in my throat!

Wow 6! I don't think I could ever do more than 2 if they're the tiny round kind, lol. You think I'd learn how to take a pill, I would guess I've taken at least close to a million over my lifetime. I asked my mom why she taught me that way because she takes them normally and she said "I don't know, you were a special kid", lol gee thanks mom!

I've been told I'm special, too... actually Mom thought I was a bit of a Martian, compared to my sisters!LOL! I've never done things the way others do... I kinda like that about me!

Interesting method. I definitely take a drink of water first, pill second. My husband's method is to put the pills in his mouth and then jerk his head backward and i do mean jerk. I keep telling him he's going to get whiplash. Since he takes so many vitamins, it's absolutely annoying at times all that head swinging going on. I'm going to try this to see if the pill floats... Well, I have to admit I tried this last night with limited success the first time. The second time went well, so it's a matter of perfecting the technique.... On the otherhand, if I ask my husband to stop one of his annoying habits, he says it's my problem - I fuss too much. Oh, I'll get ugly one of these days all right LOL. In the meantime, I'll just let the old goat keep whipping that head around - it's probably the best exercise he gets all day haha!....whit

hey alamode, its already my way to swallow pills. i cant directly swallow pilss without any help of something. when i was child, i told by my parents to swallow pills with banana. how is the way? first, eat banana in your mouth. when its already smooth enough, dont swallow it first. its time to put your pills on it. then swallow it together :) and now, beside eat banana, or drink a water, i can swallow pills with any food that i eat on that time. thnks for sharing in here

What a good idea! I think that would be great for kids because some things aren't chewable. I'll add that to my store of 'gramma hints'... I know I'll need it... Thanks!

YES!!! i feel that the pills sticking in my throat all the time.It just won't go down no matter how much water i drink right after taking a pill.My mom always said "must be your imagination" ..so am i just imagining that the pill doesn't want to go down?hah.Mom is funny.I opt to crush it into smaller pieces as possible so that i won't feel it sticking in my throat.I hate that feeling. =_=

Bending your head down really works!! I pop 7 meds and supplements into my mouth at once, and can get them down with two swallows of water... and some of them are big capsules! I don't recall ever having my imagination stuck anywhere either... LOL!!

I hope this will work for you... knowing that pills float made a big difference to me, made me think about them differently when I took them. It may be mind over matter!

yeah sometimes, but I usually fill my mouth with water and just drown the pill in it, It's the easier way and some pills taste horribly so I prefer not to feel anything. I don't have to take many pills fortunately, just during those days 1 or 2.

I have one thats especially nasty... after its down, I have to drink something strong like orange juice to get the taste to go away. Luckily, I don't need that one very often. I'm glad that you aren't on the pain med merry-go-round like so many of us... enjoy that for as long as possible. I'll never be off of all of them, but I'm working to get myself down to as few as necessary. And I'm making good progress! Take care.
