Ever tried to stand on a Lily pad?

I used to walk around the grounds of a cement works, where my Grandfather worked, and in the grounds there was an enormous pond. It had a bricked surround on which you could actually sit and watch the fish and frogs. One particular day I watched a frog hopping from lily pad to lily pad and I thought it might be rather fun to do that, so off I started - and promptly sank like a stone as soon as I landed on Lily pad 1. Luckily Grandfather had very quick reactions and he fished me straight out again. It must have looked just like a cartoon sequence. When I was a child girls wore skirts which had a sort of bib at the front and a cross wise piece at the back and he simply grabbed that and hauled me out. My Mother was absolutely furious when we trailed back home and I was absolutely soaked but actually I had had a great time. However, don't try this one at home . . .

About five or six, I think. We used to love going to the old factory with Grandad and I loved the pond. It was lucky I had those straps on the back of my skirt or I would have gone down to the bottom of the pond. Grandad was in the Navy though so I suppose he would have come and got me.

Actually I was a litle Angel :-) I only wanted to go over and sit by the froggie. How was I to know the lily pad wouldn't take my weight? Actually, what would have made you laugh was the look on my Nan's face when we walked into the room! She was not amused.
