I've just started reading Ken Follet's "A Dangerous Fortune". I read some of his works years ago but nothing recently. Does anyone else read his books or have any comments to make on his writing abilities?

I have read some of Ken Follet's work years ago I especially liked his "Pillars of the Earth" Which Oprah has just discovered. It is a great book one you don't want to put down. I'm surpriesed that it took Oprah so long to find this great book.

I really don't know because I don't keep up with her very much. I just know that this is a very good book. It is a kind of historical novel of that time period

Hi Adoniah, I remembered the name, and after checking Ken Follet out on "Wikipedia" I remembered the book I read. It was "Die Nadel" (the needle). My next-door neighbour gave it to me (I don't know, if I actually ever returned it, most likely not, or else I would remember). Exellent book! You can check out Ken Follet here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Follet You do not need to read any further, as the following has nothing to do with Ken Follets writing I only explain how I received this book and I do owe Markus an apollogy. I intend to do this myself one day when I meet him, as I prefer to take responsibility for my choices (consciouly or subconsciously) I have made in my life. (I also remember vaguely the movie, as it had Donald Sutherland in it) I wouldn't mind watching the movie again. It had something to do with an Island (towards the end of the movie) and I thing Donal Sutherland was sitting on a chair, white hair...)But I'm not sure. This is not the only thing I have to say about my nice neighbour. His name is Markus Wohlgeschaffen (Markus "Well done") but me and my friends always teased him by calling him "Fehlgeschaffen" ("wrongly done, or wrongly "made") which was a very mean thing to say and I could feel his hurt at times although he always kept on smiling, so I assumed he can take just as much as I can, because I never had problems with "swear words" used against me. We had "competitions", who finds the worst "swear word". My kids are getting good at it too. But I tell them that they only are allowed to use them in the game with "good" intensions. I do tell them off, when they use the words during fights. After all, it is not the word which hurts, but the intension. If it would be the word, it ought to hurt every time you hear it. Ask yourself... How come also, that we can use these words "against" our best friends, but would not dare to say them to a "stranger"? Life is funny, when you walk around and have your senses switched on. Sorry Adoniah, I do get a little bit sidetracked here. Lucky for me that I am not out for the "best response". However this book was one of the best thrillers I stumbled across (maybe this is the reason why I never returned it?) I get this all the time, that I give away books, and don't get them back. To me it just means, that these people treasure my book, so, if I really liked a particular book again, I go and get it again. Zecharia Sitchins 12th planet for example: I have the German and the English edition, gave the english one away, to never been seen again. I went to "Dymocks" and there they had one more edition under "science fiction". After I gave this book to another work college of mine, it "dissappeared" just like the first one. (Both guys left the company I am working for). Well I thought, I go to Dymmocks and get another one... None left, so one day I ordered another edition over th internet. I still haven't read it yet (I mean after the first time I read it I don't know how many years ago.) I never intended to have it for me anyway. It was just a major stepping-stone on my way so I wanted to keep it to be able to share it with others. If you made it down here without using the scroll bar, you know why I still feel guilty. Shalom

Sorry, I forgot, you look a bit like Markus - from a distance. And Ken Follet looks a bit like my friend Keith (here). If I find the book I will certainly get it, as I always took recommendations serious (hints for the way). This is the second book I found here I intend to read in the future. I hope I can find them again... ;)

I think that if you can keep from getting side tracked you Will write that book! You definitely have the flow of words. I did not mean to put you on a guilt trip about borrowing books. But, yes, now that you so eloquently triggered my memory "Die Nadel" was an excellent Novel. However, I never saw the movie. You also have an excellent memory! I do enjoy your postings!

I read The Pillars of the Earth and The Key to Rebecca a few years ago, and even though I remember really liking his writing - he tells a good story - I haven't read anything of his lately, so I guess we won't be having much of a 'discussion' about it. Sorry!

Thats OK at least you read! You'd be surprised how many people stop reading after they get out of school, unless it relates to work. Keep on reading!

I've read all the books mentioned here and probably a couple more Ken Follet's. I am pretty much like the others I read almost all his books a few years ago and remember enjoying most of them especially Pillars of the Earth. I guess I would recommend them because I can only remember reading them all, I don't remember the stories anymore, so they must have been half decent. Maybe it's time I pulled them out and gave them another read. Happy holidays!
