What is Bollywood? I have seen it mentioned here in discussions a number of time but that is the only place I have heard the term. Is it like Hollywood, but in a different country other than the U.S.?

Bollywood is a term used to describe popular Indian films - it is a pun on Hollywood. India actually produces a lot more [Bollywood] films than Hollywood and they have a large fan base in India and Arab countries, and also underground World-Movies culture. Many of them are all-singing, all-dancing fun. I'm a fan =)

Modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, called "Bride and Prejudice" is a good example of a large-budget Bollywood film, if you are interested =)

singing and dancind along with beautiful locations and sets are a major part of indian films. Most of the songs in the indian films do not require a meaning or occassion . They just happen in the movie. Almost all the indian movies are colorful.

Its a surprise you never heard of Bollywood. It is the Indian film industry which has a veiwership of 3 billion people and churns out about 500 movies every year. It is the biggest film industry of India and its stars are famous even in North america. The most professional actor in the world, Hrithik Roshan, his picture is my profile pic, is also from Bollywood. For good Bollywood movies watch Dhoom 2, Chak de India, Khakee, Border, etc etc. Besides that's not the only film industry in India. There are 22 film industries in India making movies in 22 or more different languages. India produces more then 5000 movies every year.

It is India's answer to Hollywood. I had never heard of it until recently myself. Apparently it has been around for years. Personally, I think they should have chosen a different name.

Thank you for that information. I appreciate it. Guess they wanted it to be similar. Not sure where they get the B. Thanks for responding and have a great day.

The B in Bollywood comes from bombay as it is in earlier days(the name of the city has been changed now)where most of the filming used to be done and the entire industry is based in this region in the early days of indian film industry. Now the industry has spread far across.

I think Bollywood is an area of India, around where the city of Bombay is. It has been nicknamed this because it is an area where much filming is done, rather like in Hollywood in California, USA. Many Indian film stars are famous like stars from Hollywood. Films are big business in India.
