What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Have you ever wondered what each of us sees when we see ourselves in a mirror? I came upon this thought today as I spoke to a beautiful young woman who asked me if I thought she was repulsive to look at. This is, as I have discussed before, the same young woman who I have found to be my new interest. She is bright and energetic, loving, kind and very easy on the eyes yet, as she put it, thinks of herself as repulsive. I cannot understand why she would think that nor, as for anyone else, not find the beauty in ourselves? How do you all feel about this?

I guess what I see is totally different what others might see. I went to a club and met this woman and we left and went to dinner and then went to her place for a drink. Sitting on the sofa talking, relaxing and trying to get cozy she said to me, I hate to date men who are handsome because they are too much into themselves, that's what I like about you - your ugly! Well my mouth dropped, felt like crap and I was speechless, I got out of there as fast as I could. I just wish she would have told me how ugly I was before I paid the restaurant bill.

The only person who is ugly is her! And you had a lucky escape my friend, who wants to go with a shallow, conceited, vain woman like her? You're well rid of her and you could always send her the bill.

Now that is terrible to say the least. How can someone be that vain? I mean, it is NOT about beauty or anything physical. If the person is not good inside, what difference would beauty make anyway??? It's all about the pure human being and their outlook on life, themselves, everything. You must have been mortified with her obvious ignorant and rude statement to be sure, but look at it this way...you did get away before knowing more of her issues!

When I look into the mirror I see a hurt little boy, someone who has been through so much and carries a haunted, withdrawn look about him, I do see a young cute face but that is on a good day, on a bad day I see why people are not drawn to me, why my mouth is not right, why the scar I got when I was a child shows up like a beacon, and the bags under my eyes for the sleep my brain needs but not my body. It is a magic mirror because sometimes it tells me hey you're ok, you're cute, you're special, other days it tells me I'm a wreck.

What a sad commentary..I totally understand it though...I am almost 50....my looks were, as I always thought, not as great as my two sisters but then again, I am gay and more masculine and they are the two girlie girls...Anyway, I know that I look like my father and being that he has never been a favorite of mine (he was and still is an angry person who took out his frustrations on us and my Mom...you see what I mean?) I cannot get past that. Besides that, I just am at a point where I know that my age is really showing, my life isn't what I had hoped for and I see all of those things blaring away at me when I look into the mirror. So, like I said, in my own way, I do understand. Of course, we could not be here and not feel anything...Maybe it is better to feel than not to? Either way, I really hope we both find the peace and joy we need in our lives....

wow. that woman has issues with herself. she doesn't think that she's beautiful and she even thinks she's repulsive.. maybe some people are telling her that, that she's repulsive to look at. or maybe, she doesn't get enough compliments that's why she thinks she's not beautiful. did you ask her why she thinks she's repulsive to look at?? anyway, when i look at the mirror, what i see depends on my mood. there are times that i see that i am pretty and sexy and there are times that i see that i am plain and ugly. it just depends on my mood. ^__^

you know, I never thought about the points you have made about how this young woman may not have received much for compliments. I know that we all like it when someone else finds us attractive and interesting and fun to be around. I find her to be all of the above. I certainly hope no one has told her that she was repulsive..Let me just say she definitely is not that at all! I haven't asked her if anyone ever said anything to her or maybe even made fun of her? I guess I could ask tonight when I see her... As for what I see when I look in the mirror...Hmmm..I know I have gotten older looking and the hair is lighter..uh, with grey hairs....For the most part, my image is okay with me but I know I can always improve...I just want to find happiness and security in my life..These two I don't have right now but I hope for better chances next year...BTW...Happy New Year and thanks for your thoughts...

when i look in the mirror, these days , I see two huge zits, they will go away in a few days probably also my plain old face, maybe some loose nose hairs I haven't trimmed yet, sometimes I see my ancestors in my face anyway, that young waman has some ISSUES !!!!!!!!!! if and when she can be ok with being just sort of pretty in an aging calm relaxed sort of way, then she will be happy with herself and everything, otherwise no, not pretty enough, etc?

Eh, its a decent sight in the mirror. Other times I look beyond it and wonder more about life and myself. Then there are a few times I have much deeper thoughts about the self, reality, existence. May sound weird, but its the truth.

I don't think any of what you wrote is weird...I think we all see many things when we look at ourselves...I have seen many faces in myself from old family pictures and what we have been told that we look like. My family is all german and we have blue eyes running through the whole family and I do enjoy that...The rest is what we feel about ourselves, what we see is what we think of our own self and what we usually project amongst other people...I know that I am average looking but am above average when it comes to personality and am happy to be me!
