how to keep the dog from peeing on the christmas tree

OK, it may sound silly, but it's a real problem. a tree is the dog's natural toilet. So when we bring the tree into the house, can we blame the dog for annointing the presents underneath the tree. I've been locking my dogs in the kitchen for 17 straight christmas'. Does anyone have another alternative??

Well it is probably too late this year, but next year before you put any presents under the tree spray the bottom of the tree with plain ammonia. Spray all around the floor too. Just soak the lower limbs and make the dog sleep in that room all night. He will not pee on that tree! By morning you will not be able to smell the ammonia but he will still smell it. It will not hurt the tree it will just make it stay green longer. If you can still spray the tree now without hurting anything, it still might work now.

Thanks for Best Response cyntrow! You never told me if you tried this trick yet this year. You know ammonia works out in the yard too. It keeps the grass green and keeps the bugs and snakes away as well as stray cats. You just put it in one of those plastic bottle yard sprayers that you hook to the hose and spray away. Happy new year!

It did work, in fact. I was able to let him into the living room. He did try to eat the Christmas balls, but he didn't pee on the tree. Thanks for the advice.

Pull one or two of the lightbulbs out somewhere close to the bottom of the tree. It should only take once. ;~D

I have 2 dogs also. We get real trees every year but we place them in a large container...you know, like the ones for large plants outdoors. We put pea gravel in the container and then the tree sits in there. As for the presents..I guess maybe you should only put them out the night before they are to be opened. I know that pet stores also carry sprays to discourage dogs from doing their business in the house but I can't say they work because I haven't used them. Wish I had more tips for ya.

17 xmases? if that dog can still lift it's leg to pee at that age it deserves the right to pee anywhere it wants!!! that is like me peeing standing up at 119 years old! my grandad is 89 and pees in his seat. we smack his nose with a rolled up newspaper but he still does it!!
