Gingerbread Houses?

Gingerbread House - One of the prize-winning gingerbread houses.

I have seen hundreds of gingerbread houses down through the years, and I must admit that they are getting more and more creative each year. I just left a site where they were displaying some of the prize winning examples from the teen and adult categories. Have you ever made a gingerbread house? I can't remember ever having made one. Some of the ones they had on this site did not even look like they were constructed from gingerbread.

I made them with my son when he was little, but none recently and none of them even came close to the one in the picture you posted. I see no gingerbread in it at all. It must have been made by a professional cake decorator.

Wow, if these people were amateurs...the pros could build houses like the Taj Mahal.

According to the details that came along with the photos, Debs, they were all done by non-professionals.

When I hear or see gingerbread houses they always remind me of that story Hansel and Gretel, I think it was a Hans Christian Andersen tale about a couple of children getting lost in a forest and coming across a house made of gingerbread! As a child that always fascinated me, I remember our teacher reading us that story and then bringing in a gingerbread house for us to look at. She wasn't best pleased however at the end of the day when a few pieces had been snapped off (Wolfie was innocent that time!) I don't think she brought in anything after that to show! Mean woman she was, it was only a few crumbs of gingerbread and we were only about 6 at the time!

It was because looking back I should have snapped a piece off myself to eat! Grrrrr and if I had known what she was going to do about it I would have smuggled it out and shared it out in the playground LOL!

So, I guess you've always been a little wolf, heh? Would have served her right indeed.

They are neat looking, but I have never made one. They look too detailed and time consuming to me. I am not much for having patience to do such tasks.

I think you would have to be an artistic type, Thoroughrob, or a baker to put all of that work into one.

Never tried constructing one of these. I don't think I could keep from gobbling up the materials before I finished. But I bet there are people who can create fantastic gingerbread homes.

They absolutely do, sigma, as proved by the contests that are held each year.

One year I bought one of those cheap kits you can buy at Wal-mart or at craft stores and made a ginger bread house. It probably wasn't as pretty as the ones your saw on-line but it was a lot of fun to make!

I would have to say, spiderlizard, that they aren't our mothers gingerbread houses.

I love gingerbread houses. I think they're cute, and moreso, I think it's amazing what people can do with food! I mean, people really create some elaborate houses from gingerbread. I've seen ones that are built to look like the Harry Potter world, and other's that are built to look like hometowns. It's really amazing. Not to mention, these people are motivated enough to stay with it all those hours to finish building them.

Some people do have an amazing talent for this sort of thing, highflyingxangel. Just the thought of how much work they involve makes me tired. They are really something to see once they are finished though.

I made some with my grandsons last year...It was really fun...but we sort of cheated...it was a last minute decision and so we bought sheets of gingerbread and then cut it into our own shapes...they were really cute!!! I've always loved gingerbread cookies...so maybe growing up I preferred eating to building..( which is still true today!!!) There are some people that are so talented when it comes to creating the perfect gingerbread house...nothing like my 4-walled simplistic house with a frosting roof and lots of candy trim!!! I won't be doing it this year...but I would do it again with the kids...they loved the whole messy thing!!

I'm with you on the preference for eating rather than building, rx4life! I have always loved the taste of warm gingerbread. My aunt used to make cookies, and I even made a cake a couple of years ago, albeit from a box mix. It turned out very well.

There is a lot of work that goes into the constructing of these delicacies, 3lilangels.
