Pearls are formed in the closed shells underneath the sea. They are collected by diving experts and given to Pearl collectors. They sell them on wholesale basis to big merchants. From big merchants it goes to retail jewellers. This is what I understand. The colour of pure pearl is like mercury. Very easily you can make out the difference between the good and cheap ones.

Fresh water pearls are my faves. They seem to be a little bit more random in shape and colour.
