Do you have healthcare insurance? Is it now mandatory in your state?

Looking for health care insurance or have it? - finding health care insurance
United States

I'm lucky enough to have been on my state health care for about 7 years now and have never had a problem with it. I have a small co pay that's not bad and a great doctor. Now they are making it mandatory for people in MA, I'm not sure about other states, to have health insurance or they have to pay a penalty and I don't think that's fair. My son works in retail, his pay is commission based and he's having a hard time finding a health insurance that he can afford. What is your health insurance situation? Do you have health insurance or are you looking for a good one before the first of the year? Are you worrying about it or are you all set?

I live in Canada so we all have universal health care. I can't imagine what it would be like to not have health care and having to pay for everything. It's one of my favorite things about living in Canada.

Watch out...half of the US is probably on it's way to Canada right now...lol...since it's going to be mandatory in at least MA that we have it and it's so expensive.

Is it as hard to get a doctors appointment in Canada as they say? I've heard people comment that sure there is free health care in Canada but the doctors are so over booked that you die waiting to be seen.

I don't have insurance. I work in retail as well. I earn to much to qualify for state help and yet not enough to afford insurance. I'm in good health and I hope I stay that way for I couldn't afford to even walk into a doctors office right now and I definetly could not afford insurance. It is unfair. Then again car insurance is mandatory and I can't afford that either and they offer no state help for that.

Well, don't let me get started on car insurance! I don't drive and don't have to worry about it but my sons fiance' does and I see what she pays. It's all very ridiculous isn't it?

That's terrible that they would make it mandatory for you to buy health insurance. My husband and myself only have health insurance while he is deployed so if I have a problem I try to hold off until he's deployed which is about 8 months out of the year. That insurance is free and have very little copay on visits. We can't afford insurance to pay for it and we make too much to qualify for state funded anymore. My husband is never sick. I think he's been to the doctor once is three years. Me I'm sick off and on but it is actually cheaper to just pay per visit because my doctor is nice enough to give a discount if you don't have insurance but he knows it's because you can't afford it. I worry sometimes but it's not like we can do anything about it. I think the cheapest insurance is now $175 per person so if we had to pay each month it would cost up $350 and that's just not possible.

I've been researching insurance plans for my son and haven't found anything under $200 which is very expensive for him.

Australia has a compulsory health scheme called Medicare. It is funded by taking a small amount out of our wages. For many people on low incomes it is free. As Medicare has limited services, many people opt for Private health insurance. This is not compulsory. I used to have private health, but dont any more, as it is so expensive. I do have private cover for dental & optical. My husband has full private health insurance, as he a number of medical problems.

We also have a so called Medicare plan here in the US but it's basically useless. Even those who have it...and pay for it still need to get another Ins. coverage according to the governments new rules.

I do have health insurance. It is not mandatory to have insurance here in Texas but if you need to see a doctor or get sick and have to go to the hospital, without insurance you are out of luck. They use to have charity hospitals here and we still have one LBJ but it is very hard to get in.There are a lot of people in this state that die because of the lack of health care.It is a shame too.If you want to purchase insurance it is so high that the average person cannot afford it...

You're so right....the average WORKING man can't even afford to keep himself healthy enough to go to work every day. I think that's a sad state of affairs.

Pshaw. I haven't had health insurance since I was 19. I'm 25. I don't go to the doctors and I'm now too old to be covered under my parents even though I'm in school. Making it mandatory is totally unfair. I'd HAVE health insurance if my stupid company offered it. But they're cheap. They should make it mandatory that it's offered to ALL places of business to give their employees insurance.

Good question I am on state care what little they allow I don't think it is mandatory here but they need to give better care to the children if nonthing else they keep cutting what they will do and soon you will see are kids dying faster and faster. We are at war give us a break we are not that over populated and if they would bring are jobs back and get the illegal people out of America we could afford to have health care, but this is just my view on it but I think if people are honest they will agree there are ways to make the situation better.Have a wonderful day.

So the state will fine you for not having health insurance that you can't afford in the first place? Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. What happens to the people who don't pay the fines? Do they go to jail?

In my state (place), it is not mandatory to have a health care. The government has not mandated it yet. But people are getting health insurance even without being forced to. It is a necessity to have one in case of emergency.

I am under state-sponsored health care, ctry, and very thankful for it. I do have to pay a small co-pay, but it is well worth it. With the costs of health care rising so much it would be impossible for me without it. This is one reason I would agree with a National Health Care plan. I often see people who have no health care at all, and it is sad to see people suffering because they cannot afford to visit a doctor when they are sick.

I'm for a National plan too if they make it affordable for poor people to be able to do it. If I know this country even that will be expensive.

I don't have health insurance on me I have it on my kids through a state paid program and my husband is covered where he works at but it was to expensive to add me to the policy. I don't think it is right to make it mandatory alot of people can't afford how expensive it is.

Your husband is lucky to have it at his work but I bet he pays a good amount for just himself doesn't he? It's too expensive no matter where we get it from.

Right now i do but thats only because im pregnant. I get a medical card through the state. Thats great that your lucky enough to have insurance. And your right that its not fair they make it mandatory. I mean what if you cant afford it? My husband could get it through where he works but its so expensive. Just for single its $80 a month. So for both of us it would be even higher. Yet i think i remember George Bush saying everyone would have health insurance.

We currently don't have health insurance. We should have some by the end of next month. However, it is $500 a month with a $1,000 deductible (we have to spend $1000 on medical expenses before it kicks in), and then it will pay 80% of our medical costs, not including vision or dental. It really rather sucks..

Nope, so when I get sick I get to suffer and possibly die since alot of hospitals wont even take you now if you dont have any insurance. Isnt that nice. You know America is the only country that you have to PAY for medical in. it sucks :/
