why use LOL?

im so confused why a lot of people using internet uses the word lol every after writing something, whats the purpose of it?I research the meaning of the LOL and i found out that it means laugh out loud so i presume that it would be used when someone is joking or kidding but i saw many people using it even in a wrong time, especially here in mylot.
pls give me your ideas with this matter....

I know that it means "laughing out loud" but whenever I use it or whenever I see it I think of "Lots of Laughs" *shrug* I think like the first responder mentioned that it helps for the reader to understand the mindset and mood of the writer.

ahhhh so you mean your not using it frequently?like other peoples that they always put LOL every after what they have written?

Sure I think it's just an expression. Say I write a discussion that I think is amusing or funny. I may put "lol" at the end of the sentence. It tells the reader that I think what I've written is funny. This is just my opinion and there may be others out there that disagree.

so you mean that some people use it as an exression?and not to express what they really feel upon typing a comment or when chatting?maybe your right?because as i said some people putlolevery after they write something.
