Stretch marks ... itchy belly ... any relationship?

I have a friend who always "yells" at me when I scratch my itchy pregnant belly. She insists that if you scratch your belly during pregnancy that you'll get stretch marks! I just shake my head and laugh. It's my understanding that stretch marks occur in pregnant (and non-pregnant) women from putting on a lot of weight in a short amount of time. I also have read that they are hereditary. I know that some women swear that cocoa butter prevents stretch marks, but I don't see how that would help. What do you think??

I was incredibly itchy and scratched often when I was pregnant but I don't have any belly stretch marks...thankfully. I used lots of Belly Butter, which has a lot of different oils in it. I think it's important to keep the skin soft and supple when it's being stretched to capacity.

Tell your friend she's nuts, just tell her you'll get them whether you scratch or not!!! You're right, skin that stretches too much without the skin being ready gives you stretchmarks, the itchiness is from the skin stretching & if you're pregnant & get big quicker at 1 point or another, you'll get them whether you scratch or not! I didn't get ANY until my baby had a bit of a growth spurt in there at around 7 - 71/2 months then i was covered in them. Cocoa butter can help to prevent but you could still get them, it basically helps to give you skin a little more elasticity, if it's more elastic then the skin can move without causing the marks - so that one is actually true! It might not prevent them but it can definitely help! I probably wouldn't agree with the hereditary part though, if your mother gains weight through pregnancy or otherwise & gets them, then there's no guarantee you'll gain that wait & get them, every person is different! Good Luck & i hope that helps!

I dont think that scratching your belly while your pregnant causes stretch marks, Getting round does! There are ways to prevent it though. I used coaco butter on my belly the entire last pregnancy and dont have any on my stomche. However, be advised, USE IT ON YOUR BUTT and BACK too. lol I didn't think to use it EVERYWHERE, and while i have no stretch marks on my belly i do have them all over my legs, butt, and sides of my back! I also gained about 60lbs too though so that was a lot of weight to gain. "BAD KFC"!

Because stretch marks occur when the layer of collagen under your skin tears, there's very little you can do to prevent them, other than remaining hydrated (to maintain suppleness) or gain weight VERY slowly, which is hardly practical during pregnancy. Some fade, but they never really go away. Cocoa and shea butter help with the itchiness, so definitely try it. My son also liked it when I would rub my belly to apply it, so either way, it's a good thing. I'm in love with my stretch marks now. They're my battle scars and my hubby thinks they're kinda hot, so I'm straight :D. Blessed Be

I'm 9 months pregnant and I was putting lotion on my belly months before I ever received my first stretchmark. It certainly didn't stop me from getting them and I didn't have an itchy belly, either. I don't know if scratching your belly will cause more stretchmarks, but I've noticed on my own belly that it is the already existing stretch marks that itch. My scratching actually caused a lot of irritation and bumps. Applying plenty of moisturizer should reduce the itching and then maybe your friend won't yell as much. :)

I have stretch marks but I dont mind them at all. I have two beautiful daughters that put them there. LOL However, Palmers cocoa butter cream does help them to fade a bit. Or it did for me.

Stretch marks are usually related to fat people who then becomes thin. It marks that your skin had stretched during the times when you were fat.

The stretch marks are due to breakdownof collagen fibers in your connective tissues when your belly get enlarge. That is why you put moisturizers like cocoa butter, virgin coconut oil, etc on it

As I know, stretch mark is because you gain weight very fast, like pregnant. not all pregnant person can get stretch mark, and it's never can cure. man can also had stretch mark. If you suddenly go to gym every day, when you never go there before, and doing exercise overtime you can get that stretch mark. And your itchy belly because your belly's skin ripped/torn .
