Puritans banned the celebration of Christmas as late as 1851. The Christmas tree were thought to have come to New England with Hessian troops during the American Revolution, or with German immigrants to Pennsylvania and Ohio, The first record of Christmas trees in America was for children in the German Moravian Church's settlement in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Christmas 1747. Christmas was altogether banned in Massachusetts by the Puritans because of the way it was celebrated. card playing, drinking, http://masstraveljournal.com/features/1101chrisban.html
