Music In The Public Domain

I would like to use samples in some of my projects, but I can't use copy written material. I would like to find some pieces in the public domain. How can you verify that a work is in the public domain, or where can you find a reputable source of public domain material. I just would like to incorporate some voice sample material into some beats that I'm working on, but I don't want to be sued somewhere down the line. Can anybody supply information on this? If no info then what are your thoughts on music in the public domain?

This one is a no brainer: here is return from Googling "Public Domain Music" www.pdinfo.com/list.htm - 8k this is an index list of music in public domain, cleared for posting, copying etc.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a no-brainer. Although there are numerous sites that list public domain material, not all are very accurate, especially since the concept of public domain is still open to individual interpretation. But thanks for the info anyway, I appreciate it.
