Moving to the boonies....

Was the worst thing I could have done!! My mother-in-law and husband (well, fiance) tried to warn me, but did I listen...NOOOO!!! If anyone doesn't know what I mean by "the boonies", I mean living way out in the middle of nowhere!!! It's weird though, there are people that live all around us, but you can't get service for anything practically!! When I first tried to get cable internet, because we live too far from their servicing area we couldn't get it!! But the sad thing is that we live in the same county, we are just off by 3 miles!! And then there is how far it is to get anywhere...it takes anywhere from 20-30 minutes if we want to go to town!! And with the gas prices as high as they are, it is murder on us financially. Truly insane. I made such an awful mistake moving from the city. I've lived there most of my life from Tucson, Az to San Antonio, Tx...even the smaller towns that I lived in I was still close enough to walk to where ever it was I needed to go (I have moved a lot by the way...LoL!!). But now, because I was so used to having everything so close to me, I don't drive and it is putting such a pinch on everything we do. Has anyone else had this experience? Or are you the type that LOVES the boonies?

When we were younger and the kids were little, living out in the middle of nowhere was something we considered from time to time. It seemed so ideal. Then we thought about taking our kids over to friend's houses, shopping trips, going to work, etc. Gas prices weren't nearly so bad then either. And, of course, don't forget all those horror movies, if you watch them giving you the creeps. Now we're living in an even bigger city and it is so convenient. I'd still like to retire somewhere a little bit smaller though, with a little less traffic. I vote for a nice compromise between nowhere and too much of everything where. Whit

I agree with you!! I used to always say that I would love to live at least 10 miles outside of the city, that way I had the feel of being out in the middle of nowhere, but still be able to go do the things I love doing in the city.

I live in the boonies too. I have to drive 10 miles to get to the closest store. If I want to go to Walmart or something it is about 28 miles. We have satellite internet service because we can't get cable internet. I kind of like it out here, but there are times that I miss civilization.

LOL...sounds like where I live. I guess growing up h ere the idea of driving 30 minutes to get to town doesn't seem like that bog of a deal but you're right about it being expensive on gas. From where we are we can only see three of our neighbors and only in the winter when the leaves fall off the trees and only then at night time when their lights are on. I'm not sure I'd say I LOVE it but it's just all I know.

My fiance's brother is who really turned me on to moving out here. They grew up here where I grew up in not only a different state, but the city as well, so this is new to me. Even in the little towns that I've lived in I lived about 5 minutes (walking time) from everything I needed. His brother LOVES it out here...my opinion of it is getting worse the longer we stay. Hopefully next year we can make a change!!
