yes, along with economic downturn, people feel depressed, and they need relax themselves while love is one of efficient ways to ease blue feeling. so, they kiss more frequently than before so that female have to use lipstick for more times, which results in that lipstick sales go up.

Here's a theory: When times are hard economically it can be assumed that many women (and men as well but we are talking about makeup) are not eating as well. Resultingly they are not as healthy and do not look as healthy, one major sign of malnurishment is paler lips. While you may be able to buy 2 loves of bread for the price of a tube of lipstick, those 2 loaves of bread are not enough to turn your health aroudn and make you look better, but one tube of lipstick can last many months, and can create the illusion of better health. So perhapes the women are buying mor lipstick in an attempt to hide or correct one of the results of haveing less money.

I guess your implying that when things begin to get rough financially women begin to see men in a different light. Or do you have a much more straightforward, or complex, thing in mind?
All women know that men are attracted to looks...first...then personality. So am I even close to your question?

I think that people always like a little luxury and when economy is not good, they just spend money on small luxury...he, he, maybe you are right, or maybe man pays for lipstick...

It sure does, people are entertaining more at home, maybe big groups or maybe small intimate get-togethers (if you catch my drift!) An lipstick is relatively cheap, so if you can't buy the expensive perfume - you spring for a lipstick.

not really. but I'm a kind of person who thinks that spending money is spending money, big or small. this is the money that we won't have when we need it.
If the economic is taking a dive, then it's even more important not to spend money even for small gifts like lipstick. I used to wear lipstick but then I look pale if I don't, so I decided not to anymore. I am investing more on moisturizers and skin treatment most of the time, rather than lipstick and make up

I don't use lipstick at all...and I am like you.
I like to have money when needed.

It makes sense to me. People may not feel they can spend money on big purchases, but lipstick is a small indulgence, so they can feel they are giving themselves something special without spending a lot.
And maybe when economic times are tough a person may want to feel better about him or herself, so they'll splurge a little on something to enhance their looks.

Hi polachicago! I think people, specifically women wants to still look beautiful or pretty despite of the economic downturn. So even we all feel he economic crunch somehow, many of us can find the budget to purchase one. Well, I am not really an expert and this is just a guess on my part. LOL! Take care and have a nice day! :) Merry Christmas and Peace to all! :)
