Romantic novels - write them or hate them?

I enjoy writing and have had lots of small items published but "the novel" has still to be conquered. Friends of mine suggested that I should try to write a romantic novel, since once you are established in that field you usually keep selling your books. Before I get flamed here, Yes, I do think actually romantic writing is very skillful and difficult and no less important than any other genre. However, my friend dumped a dozen Mills and Boon books on the sofa for me to study, to see how they were written and we found out the fatal flaw as to why I shall never be a successful writer of romantic fiction. There was no one hero I would not have strangled by about page ten. Honestly! Arrogant, controlling, overbearing, the whole pantheon of what she doesn't want. I did force myself to read the books and the story lines were brilliant and the books of a really high quality, but unfortunately I felt sorry for the girl when she got her man. So do you write romantic fiction, and what is your take on the modern hero?

It can be very therapeutic to write in that way, sometimes things that have bothered you or you felt responsible for can be seen differently after the passage of time and you can sort out how you feel about things. I have the privilege of knowing you and I agree you have had a very interesting life. Why not get it all written down and if you can't get it into final form get a ghost writer with a "percentage of sales if it sells" agreement. I for once would by a copy. hugs

We are all clever in different ways and have different skills. Some people who feel they could not write a book tell the story to someone else who write it for them. You have an excellent sense of humour so I would wager there are some very good comic short stories in there!

Mills and Boons??????????????????? I would rather not read before I touch those they are rubbish When you have read one of them you have read them all as they are all the same Nope go for the decent ones you know like Barbara Taylor Bradford and that at least there is a story and it keeps you in suspense

I like Barbara Taylor Bradwick too, as you know. I would not go so far as to call Mills and Boon rubbish, although they are fine examples of formula writing, and very successful. I just can't read the things without feeling furious lol.
