When you receive a gift, do you feel obliged to give one in return?

gifts - It's Christmas time! It's time to wrap gifts for all your friends.

I know there's no obligation to give her something too, but I feel much better if I have something to give. I usually buy gifts for my friends. But since she gave me one so early, before I even set out to shop, now all I can think about is what to give her, or not to forget to buy her one.

i feel like that too. when someone gives me a gift, i keep on my mind to buy her/him a gift and i try my best to not forget it whenever i go shopping. i think its normal and its okay to feel obliged to give back something in return since its just a feeling of appreciation that we want to show. ^__^

Thank you. I was a bit worried that maybe I was materialistic. But it's not really that way. We just want to make the giver feel special the same way he/she made us feel.

hi! nope, i am not obligated to give a gift in return. gifts are supposed to be given without expecting a return. a heartfelt gratitude expressed to the giver of the gift is enough.

I actually prefer to give presents because I like to see the expression on their face when I give them a present, although I have to admit I do get disappointed if I have bought a present for a close friend or relative and they haven't bothered to buy me one or even think of me. My best friend didn't even give me a Christmas card this year, nor a present!

Yes, probably if we talk about Christmas Party, then you are obliged to give some gifts in return. Actually, this is really nice because we are giving and exchanging gifts from one another. There are also some occasions like for example, it's your birthday, then you're not obliged to give in return for those people who gave some gifts to you. :-)

^_^ Of course if it's my birthday, I won't be obliged to give gifts in return. Because no one would give me one. haha. Actually, I'd be obliged to treat them... wahaha...

hehe. It is a nice gesture. And besides, as they say, it is better to give than to receive. ^_^

I do feel like I should get people something. I usually get little festive tubs and bake cookies and give them to people that I know only a little bit. It's really to hard to get everyone something.

Yes, I know. If you try to give everyone a gift, it's either you'd go broke, or you'll have no more time left to celebrate Christmas. But you should give something to your close friends, or the ones that made this year special. Thank you for responding. Have a Merry Christmas!

Not really, if the gift is surprise then I think I’m not that oblige or I mean the word oblige is not really implied. I think whenever I have something, then I’ll give something but if I have nothing to give then saying thank you and my respect to that person is I guess enough.

Yes, just during holidays though. Although if you didn't buy them one, it's okay just to say "thank you", because honestly, most people don't actually think of getting anything in return.
