Tis the season...but what about the rest of the year?

I am referring to helping those in need. I know that at this time of the year we are all more aware of the generosity and special attention directed toward families and people who don't have the resources to feed and clothe their families...but what about the rest of the year? Do you find yourself trying to do some small thing to help someone less fortunate? I love the outpouring of kindness that is more prevalent during the holidays..but often find myself wondering why it isn't in our hearts and minds more often throughout the year. I try to find small ways to help those that need it, but know I could be more vigilant about it..I don't usually make resolutions at the New Year..but this year I think I will make one before the current year ends..and that would be to find more ways to be a part of the solution for those who suffer in many ways...I know I can find the time to squeeze in some sort of volunteer work that might bring some joy to the lives of others. How about you? Do you feel a need and desire to reach out to others? It can be as simple as responding to discussions...sometimes people are just reaching out through their computers looking for a friendly reply..we can all do that...but what other things might we be able to do in order to help our fellow citizens of the world?

I love to help others in need, even though, at the moment, I'm one of those people. I help year-round, while others help during the holidays. Every time the Big Brother/Big Sister truck is out my way, I always find things to donate to them, and the best part is that they come to my home to pick it up - helpful now that I can't drive. Yearlong, I collect many items for our local Amvet's, who in turn, gives the items to others. For instance, I save all coupons, including expireds, and they get sent to military bases that can use them up to 6 months past the expiration date. We save Boxtops for Education and Campbell's Soup Labels for Education and give them to local schools. We save cancelled postage stamps for underpriviledged countries to buy school buses. We save pull tabs from cans for the Shriner's, who melt it up ans sell it and use the money to buy things that isn't otherwise covered (book cases, seats, etc.) At our recycling facility in town, we have a swap shed, where people put unwanted items, and other people come and take it. You'd be amazed at the number of things that people are willing to throw away (and not even to donate it). Sometimes I will use that stuff to donate to others that I know are in need of it. At work, I answer emergency phone calls and send out help to people who need it, so there's more help there too. Every year there is something to do to help those in need. There is a need all year long too. So, if you can, please help these people.

You are exactly the kind of person I look up to and aspire to be like...what a great job you are doing of using all the things that can be recycled into forms of help for others..you must have a deep commitment to be a wonderful participant in your quest to help others!!! I try to do the same...if I can't give money or time in the form of volunteering, then I try to collect things for others also!!! And then you even carry that over into your job!!! I agree about how peoople are willing to toss out things that could help others..and it distresses me.. I'm a rescuer...sometimes that's good and sometimes it's a bit of an overwhelming problem...but anything I can do for others is always good for me too!!! Best to you...you really deserve a pat on the back for your active role in helping...just think what the world would be like if there were more of "you" around!!! Thanks so much for the response ...it lifts my spirits...Peace be yours and the world's...

Thank you for your kind words, I really needed it! I've been actually feeling bad because I'm having a horrible year this year and haven't had the time to volunteer or money to donate, but have been doing as much as I can. I'm hoping to have abetter year next year and be able to do more for others!
