Are you really good at giving directions to someone who is lost?

One of my biggest nightmares when traveling would be that we'd get lost and have to ask some perfect stranger for directions. Not that I would hesitate to ask for directions if needed, but I don't think strangers are often very helpful or accurate when giving out directions to the nearest attractions, highways, etc.
In addition, it would be a nightmare if someone else asked me for directions, as I'm not very good at finding places. So, I wouldn't be much help to anyone else. Do you think that you are really good at giving directions to others who are lost? Have you ever accidentally given someone the wrong directions to a location? What happened?

I am pretty good at giving directions to a place that I know. I know most of the street names si it is not a problem. When I am traveling I am not afraid to ask people for directions if I get lost.

i don't mind getting lost when travelling. half the fun is finding my own way to a particular place. some times we get to see sights we would have missed for sure otherwise. i usually try to wonder around the area first before asking for help. guess i've been lucky so far as i've always met friendly strangers who wouldn't hesitate in pointing me to my destination.
as for giving directions, i'd only do it if i'm familiar with the area. maybe i've got a friendly demeanour but i've always got asked for directions. if i'm familiar, i'd go as far as bringing them there if it's not too out of my way. however, if i'm a little lost myself, i'll point the person to the nearest store or gas station for more help. cheers ;p

LOL, yeah, just now as a matter of fact.
I got a surprise call from my sister earlier today saying she was on her way to an airport in my area and needed directions because her map seemed to be wrong. When she told me her current location, I knew she was less than 10 minutes away from where she needed to turn so I rushed the phone to hubby since he had a more recent memory of the area. Luckily he was able to confirm the streets she was seeing and was able to get her to the airport on time to pick up her business client from Japan.
A few hours later she calls back and asks for a recommendation for some entertainment. After looking up various places for her, she set off with the directions and phone number but called back to tell me she'd called the place we found and was told they were closed on Sunday, could I find something else...
Another search and I found them directions to a steak restaurant that specialised in chicken fried steak. This time I called to confirm they were open, had the item on their menu, and asked how late they were open. Wouldn't you know, it was in the other direction, so they had to backtrack again. Without realising it, construction had made some changes to the area and caused enough of a delay that they wouldn't make it before they closed. Did a new search, found something on their route that suited their alternate restaurant request and eventually had them eating after a one hour tour of our lovely city.
I felt so bad about all the misdirections, but was pleased to get them to where they wanted to go over the phone. As soon as I knew they were at the restaurant, I did a new search to get them directions back to their hotel. With all the zooming in and out on the maps, I had't realised they were so close. Believe it or not, they were less than 10 minutes away!
I know how to give directions based on the information I'm given and can use the internet to find at least general information and directions for most places. My experience as a real estate appraiser helped me sharpen my mapping skills as I had to find some very rural areas in order to do my job. Since my sister used to be in the same profession, she knew I could give her personalised assistance better than just calling the place she wanted to go. It's been our experience that not everyone is aware of their surroundings and couldn't even tell you what was down the street as a landmark. When you're going 55 mph, you need some reference point down the street so you know when to start looking closer, letting you pay attention to driving in traffic.
I can't say I would go this far for just anyone, but after this experience, my hat's off to the people at OnStar. They do this everyday.
ps. I just remembered a time years ago when my sister gave me directions to her new house. She had sent the same directions to everyone in the family but I was coming from the north and they were coming from the south. She had adjusted all but one of the turns on my set and had me going in circles for 2 hours trying to follow her directions. I can't wait to remind her of this tomorrow after her business meeting.

I'm not very good at giving directions in terms of driving, but I've gotten pretty good at giving directions to random lost tourists in downtown Seattle. :) I walk pretty fast, which a lot of people take as a sign that I know where I'm going. Even though I've lived here just over a year, I do know my way around downtown pretty well, and I can give people directions to most of the places they're trying to find. But when it comes to driving somewhere, I'm not as good as it, because I don't always remember street names. :)

It depends. Where I live now in Pittsburgh PA to be honest I can't find my way to the bathroom in this city! But if I was where I call home in Cape Coral FL then yes I could give directions like no other. I can tell you street names and or land marks. I can honestly say I know every road there. I can even tell you how long it will take you to get there if I know at what time you will be traveling there. My mom still calls me for directions and Im 1200 miles away now!

I'm so bad at giving direction because I never know the name of the street.
It's easy for me to explain to people how to go to my house because it,s really simple and it,s not too far from the highway and there is not much street to go on. When I have to explain for somewhere else I always ask my boyfriend to explain. he's really good and he knows how to go everywhere lol

I'm OK at giving directions, but a woman would probably be more appreciative of my efforts that a man. That is because like a lot of women, I'm good at going by landmarks for directions (such as turn left at such and such church when you see it).

I am not. As I have a bad sense of direction. I can even know the roads very well, so it is much more difficult for me to give directions to others. When others ask me, I will feel very confused and sometimes I prefer to go there with them as I can't explain it well.
