The only way to check a cat's temp is through it's butt. You'll need either a standard or a digital thermometer, With a standard thermometer, you'll need to shake down the mercury to a level below 96ºF (35.6ºC). Lubricate the bulb with a small amount of Vasoline or K-Y jelly. Lift your cat's tail and insert the tip of the thermometer into the butt. Push the thermometer forward at an angle parallel to the spine until it is inserted about halfway. With a standard thermometer, leave the thermometer in place for 1½ to 2 minutes. With a digital one, leave it in until it beeps. Protect the thermometer from breaking by holding it in place or cupping your hand around it. Should it break, don't try to remove the fragment. Your cat will probably expel it himself within a short time. Call your veterinarian and let him know the situation, as your cat may need professional assistance. And by all means don't use that termometer on a human. I have one digi thermometer for humans and one for pets. Both are marked accordingly. The normal body temperature of a cat is 100.5º to 102.5ºF (38.0º - 39.2ºC).

It's a little high, but not much. Your cat probably has an infection that can be cured with a round of antibiotics. Left untreated, yes, the cat can die. Take it to a vet or see if your vet can give you some liquid antibx to give him.
