A teenage girl was gang raped. A Saudi court sentenced her to 6 months in jail and 200 lashes. Bowing to international pressure Saudi King Abdullah pardons rape victim. Here is the full story http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2007/12/17/1197740185397.html 1. What do you think of a legal system that punishes a rape victim? 2. What pressure do you think should be brought on Muslim countries to reform their legal system?

I'm not sure what to think, the Saudi system is a particularly evil one but the are a relatively stable state. Secondly, it is worth considering that before the escalation in conflict between the Muslim world and the West, Muslim law in many such countries was undergoing gradual liberalisation. Ways were found to circumvent Islamic law in some countries. One of the downsides to the conflict is that this liberalisation has been reversed. all the best urban

Well said Urban. However the conflict is not just a decade or so old. It is rooted in the fundamentals of people who believe that "if you are not with us - you die". When a people start to "pardon" a rape victim any thinking person can see the grime of a system. Cheers!

Coffeechat is back! Hooray! Now, as to your thread. Obviously, the Saudi legal system is more of a mechanism to strengthen Islam than it is a legal system. No legal system would punish a rape victim. What pressure to bear? I'm not sure it is any other country's business to interfer with another's legal system. Would the UN have any jurisdiction? Personally, I'd surely take it into account when doing business with them. Afterall, if the legal system is that bad concerning rape, how good can it be when it comes to enforcing contracts? Welcome back, again!

Good to be back Red and thanks. You are right about the legal system in any country being its own business. However as the world becomes a smaller place there are many local matters that become a matter of global public concern. I do not think the UN has any jurisdiction over any country unless it is approved by two thirds majority in a General Assembly. That is why Bush created a consortium of a few countries and went into Iraq - because it was clear that the sentiment of most of the UN member countries was that the UN should not meddle in Iraqi internal affairs. Human rights is another issue. Rape is a violation of individual freedom and rights. Organizations such as Amnesty International, Unicef (against child labour and paedophilia) etc deal with these things. But your opinion counts! And so does that of every civilised human being.

woah thats bad!! a rape victim should not be punished at all. her attackers should have the severe punishment. i think Muslim countries need to look at their legal system and get a grip. if only every country had a government like ours here in UK. our country totally respect human rights and thats a good thing
