To your kids is it Santa or Jesus...

When your kids are young, what would you tell them, the real meaning of Christmas? Or you tell them about Santa and saving Jesus for later? Do you think it's wrong to tell your kids about Santa? Do you think that you're lying to them? Or do you think it's good that you're giving them something magical to believe in.

We only celebrate Santa in our house since we are atheist and don't believe in god or Jesus. I enjoy pretending to be Santa every year and coming up with new stories to keep them interested in the myth. My oldest is 7 and I think she is already figuring it out. She is too smart and logical not to.

With my kids its both. They are still very young and still believe in santa. But they also know what christmas is all about. The older ones know about the birth of baby Jesus. :-)

I think it's important for parents to tell kids the true meaning of Christmas. If they really cannot understand the things Jesus did, maybe just tell them the meaning of Christmas is to Share and Give. Many children have the idea that Christmas is about receiving gifts. I think that's a very wrong thinking. Christmas is about sharing and giving love. =D It's fine to tell them about Santa but perhaps the parents should introduce Santa as a Fairy Tale Character just like Cinderella. =D

With my kids, I intend to let them believe in the magic of Christmas but they are also going to know the real reason for the season, the birth of baby Jesus. I don't think you have to chose between the two. As long as they realize we are celebrating Jesus' birthday on Christmas day, I think there is no harm in letting them believe in Santa. Also, I don't believe that letting them believe in Santa is "lying" to them either. You are just letting them use your imagination. Would you tell them to stop playing with their imaginary friend because it would be lying to them in letting them believe in it? I think it is the same thing with Santa.
