Is Sparta a Free State

The Spartas in this movie go on about how they were free men,not slaves.This is very against my history knowlege.
Even in the movie, it seems as if Spatan boys were forced into battle, forced to bash each other up, to kill animals, etc. How can this be freedom if they are forced into this brutality?

This is courageous movie and truly inspiring. This is my favorite movie well taken. I watched it twice

300 was a killer movie, Ha I kill me.. HA there I go again... Anyway my wife is into over analyzing movies. Me I just enjoy them for what it is. But if I had to form an opinion I would say that freedom has never been free and some sacrifices need to be made to sustain that...
