What are the most extreme things you do to be frugal? What are your reasons for being frugal? WE do the usual, use energy efficient bulbs, hand up as much wash as possible and only use the washer/dryer in the evening when its less expensive. We wash our dishes and shop at the Sunflower Market - great prices - many organic items too. We have a wood stove to heat half the house and we have a community grden and chicken coop. We are frugal to be able to visit my sick mom, for me to be able to shop for produce at the co-op - for political reasons - to be able to eat healthy unprocessed food - its expensive to be healthy! And for my husband to eventually get another tv! We also want to save for an energy efficient, off the grid house and put husband into 401K and a college fund for the baby. And of course for us to go to school so my husband to get out of his somewhat dangerous career and me to first get a certificate so I can work at home and then to get more therapy credentials. Anyway...what is the most extreme thing you do to save money? Why are you thrifty?

I am thrifty because I love it. I do the same things you do light bulbs. I also have fabric grocery bags saves on plastic. I don't drive far unless I am going to the doctors. My children will tell you the most extreme thing I do is when my husband goes on deployment for several months I take our cable down to the basic. That drives them crazy. They should be happy we have it at all while he is gone.

So you're thrifty AND environmentally conscious, right on. My mom used to put the tv 'on vacation' in a closet somewhere - that was back when 'cable' meant 'HBO' basically. We, like most people didn't have it. So going down to basic wouldn't have been a big deal!

We have 6 kiddos, so we need to be frugal! I try to shop for groceries while on sale (I stock up and use coupons whenever possible). I also price match at Wal-Mart. I try to combine errands to save on gas. We re-use an recycle what we can as well.

I think that's so well thought out and practical. We use freecycle.org. We give away things we no longer need and if there is something we don't need new, we'll get it from another freecycler.
