Are you afraid of Crossing the Road?

No, I'm not scared of crossing the road. Being born and raised in the UK, we have quite strict laws about cars stopping for pedestrians at pedestrian crossings or at traffic lights. At any rate, you are not supposed to run someone over – if a pedestrian steps out in front of you it is your responsibility to be able to stop in time. I was taught that when learning to drive. Of course that doesn’t apply on the motorway, you don’t expect to see a pedestrian stepping out in front of you there. But on residential roads, drivers should be alert at all times that pedestrians, especially young children can jump out at any time in front of you. I know you live in India pal, I have been to Calcutta often and have seen how people take their lives in their hands by jumping out in front of cars and how car drivers often ignore road signs such as lights turning red and continue to drive across. In this respect I am not surprised you are scared of crossing the road. I do get very annoyed when I’m driving and someone steps out in front of the car when there is a pedestrian crossing only yards away where they should wait to cross. Not only could they be killed by a driver but that driver would have to live with the guilt and I do really very pissed off at people who behave that way here in the UK as it is just not on. There are no laws against pedestrians behaving like idiots, but I know in some parts of the USA pedestrians can get done for jay-walking for doing that which I do believe should be introduced in other countries too! On top of all that, when I was growing up, we were taught the green cross code at school - which meant you should never cross the road till the little green man showed at the pedestrian crossings, I sure hope they're still teaching that in schools...

Hi Bunchi, I live in a small town and the traffic here is not so congested so I don’t feel scared when crossing the road. One of my friends would feel nervous and afraid when crossing road. She always holds my arm tightly whenever we have to cross a street. Yeah, I like to help people especially those elderly or kids to cross road. For the sake of our safety, I would use the pedestrian bridge to cross the busy streets and roads when having vacation in a big city. posting and take care.

hi buchi_bulla! it depends on what road it is. i mean, in the road in our town, i'm not really scared of crossing it. i don't feel any danger when i'm crossing in any part of it. although, my mother was once almost run over by a vehicle because of the carelessness of my niece who was with her that time. they were in the middle of the road. she went ahead to cross but my mother saw a still far vehicle coming and she was a bit panicky and so she tried to stop my niece from crossing and it was too late too see the car behind her, she was able to avoid it but she lost her balance and fall on to her butt. she was so nervous that time and she was angry at my niece. anyway, i'm not really afraid to cross roads. but there are certain roads which i am really scared to cross even if i'm with other people. there's this road, its very wide and a lot of cars and buses often pass it and they are just so fast and that makes me scared to cross that darn road. its a national road by the way. so a lot of vehicles traverse it. and they are really fast because they are trying to avoid the red light.

Hello dear buchi_bulla. I am not that afraid of crossing the road as I always watch the traffic lights and it is safe if we abide by the traffic rules. By the way, whenever I have to cross the road with someone else, I am always the one to take of him or her by holding the hand to protect him or her from walking across the road. I am not afraid of crossing the road...well except when I start thinking about it. If I want to cross the road and I start thinking that a car might hit me that I am able to stand on the sidewalk for several minutes but I usually don't think about it and then I cross the road without problems.
