Lasting effects of C section

I had my son by c section. Now,almost 15 months later, I still have a numb area on my belly above the incision. I talked with my doctor about it a couple of months after I delivered and she said it can last as long as a year, and sometimes it is even permanent. It is because of the transverse cut going through some nerves, and sometimes they don't heal properly. The numb area is about the length of the incision, and about 3 or 4 inches high.
I have asked others I know and no one has ever heard of this before. Has this happened to anyone else after having a c section? Or am I the only one?

I have the same thing. I have had 2 c-sections. One was almost 6 years ago and the other almost 4 years ago. I still have a numb sensation around it. The other day I had an itch right around the incision and I realized its still numb. Its like you cant feel anything in that area. Mine is about 6-7 inches long and 2 inches high...All numb! I dont think it will ever go back to normal. Like the doc said they have to cut through mussle, fat and nerves to get the baby. Then they stitch it but dont put all the nerves back together {that would take days LOL} so you get a numb sensation. I figure it will always be that way considering my last c-section was almost 4 years ago.
Merry Christmas!!

I've pretty much resigned myself to the idea that it will always be there. I get an itch every once in a while, but I can't feel when I scratch it. Very frustrating.

No I had a c-section 4 1/2 years ago. I am not numb. I have a section of my scar on the left that burns or tingles. Every once in a while it itches! And that drives me crazy. But I'll take it in trade for what I got. That and lotion. lol. I recieved the same

I had a C-section and so have a couple of my cousins. But I've never heard of a numb area before. My C-section was a year ago and the middle of my incision is still a lttle raised. I can feel it like a little bumpy part and isn't smooth like the rest of the incision.

yes it can stay as long as a year. i had my first c-section with my son in 95 and i can tell you that whole year i could not feel that spot there. with my daughter recently in 2004, it didn't last as long but it lasted about 6-8 months.

Its not just c-section it can happen with any operation but I belive it depends on the person. I had a small cut down there and it feels weard even now (4 and 1/2 years later). The feeling was so odd that I could not wash my properly self because it felt un natural. Last year I had my gall blader removed and had 4 holes. The small once are not that bad but the major one on the belly button I can not tuch it as it feels like I am tuching wood. I can see my finger touching it but there is no feeling. Hope it goes away with time for you.

I rarely seen patients like that but usually, the scar area is itchy for four years

Nope, you aren't the only one. I had my first four children natural with no pain meds and layed in labor longer with my last one then the first 4 put together and ended up having to have my one and only girl by emergancy c-section. I also have that numbness. For a long time afterwords I would get really sharp pains by the incision. But that has went away for the most part. So, don't be too worried. I think it's normal. :-) Merry Christmas.

I didn't have any pains, and I think I am just used to the numbness now, because sometimes I don't notice it. Tonight my son kicked me by accident there and my husband was like 'wow that must have hurt.' But I didn't feel a thing, so there are advantages, I guess.

I had my son by section almost 10 months ago and I am totally oppisate of you. My area around my incision is very sensitive. My doc also told me the same thing that it can take up to a year to go back to normal or can stay with me permanently. Sorry I dont have the same experince as you but I guess that goes to show that we are all different.

This thing does happen? Oh my goodness! I've never heard of other people having such a problem after a c section. I'll try to ask around more but I really haven't heard of such complaints. That sounds scary. Hope you'll feel better in a few months.

My incision spot is not numb anymore at 19 months post-partum, but I do still get teh internal itchy feeling sometimes. I hate that! I also hurt myself really bad sometimes if I stretch or turn too quickly. The muscle pulling hurts so bad. I really hope that goes away some day!
