Well as most my friends know I am my fathers caregiver. he is a very lazy old man. He usues one of those electric lift chairs. Well he has on not that he "really" uses it. That's because he is lazy and doesn't want to wait for it to lift him. Anyhow that's beside the point. Now I had, yes I said had, a really nice lamp until recently. That's had to be replaced due to my dads laziness. It is a lamp that has 5 light fixtures on it. It had a weighted base as well to keep it stable and from falling over. Now dad would not get up to turen the lamp on. He would litterally grab the light by it's pole pulling the switch to his reach then turn it on or off. Well with a weighted base that wear and teqar like this will eventually break the pole. Well one day he called me, Bob I need help now." I was scared he had hurt himswelf. There he was holding the pole and lamp while the cord and base sat on the floor. he had finally broken the lamp. Now he gave me the cash to buy a new one. I got one similiar to the old one and told him not to repeat his lazy ways. Well just today I caught him once again pulling the lamp to him to turn it on. I tell him to call me if he's that lazy & I'll turen it on. Sheesh he is worse than a kid sometimes. Well it cost him $60 and he could care less if he breaks this one as well. HAHAHA!! The attatched photo is of the weighted base of the new lamp. I will add a photo of the light fixture part in a comment. Thanks all Im done babbling now. (I think) HAHAHA! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Why not put the lamp out of his reach so he HAS to get up to turn the lamp on? We did that as well but now the lamp is no more due to eletrical failure. It literally 'blew' up, tripping the breaker for the whole living room and half my bedroom. It wouldn't reset till I pulled the plug out of the outlet. After the New Years, I'm going to see if Kmart has a floor lamp I like to put on lay-a-way.

So? Tell him to get up and turn it on himself. If he whines about it, put some ear plugs in. lol Walmart no longer has lay-a-way so Kmart gets most of my business now.

Is this his bedside lamp? Well, perhaps you could place it nearer to his reach? So he can roll over to the edge of the bed and switch it on and off without having to grab it's pole? Or buy another light that is more hardy? If this is one that is not his bedside lamp then i can understand that you would want to replace the same one for the family room...

Nope. His bedside lamp is a touch lamp so no problems there. This is the living room lamp. If I move it too far away then I can't see when it's dark to read. HAHAHA! A no win situation maybe? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

He needs a clapper for Christmas. That way he can clap his hands and the light comes on. You can also go to one of the big box stores(Lowes, Home Depot etc.) and explain the situation, they should have something to where you plug the lamp into that and then there is a switch to turn it on and off, he can have the switch next to him. Good luck.

I'm sorry your dad broke your lamp. I'm glad he gave you the money to replace it though. Maybe you could try moving the lamp so he has to get up to turn it on or off or maybe then he would at least call you to do it if he's too lazy to do it and then it wouldn't get broken that way again by him.

Well they do say the older we get we regress to our child like behaviors. I guess money isn't an object to him! To me it would be a lessoned learned and not to have to shell out another $60 bucks to have the lamp replaced. That is good of you to be your dad's caregiver.

Nope. The money doesn't bother him. He says he may as well spend it before we get our hands on it. HAHAHAHA! I could buy some really nice track and recessed lighting for the living room if he wrote a check for it. HAHAHAHA!!! Thanks, I've been taking care of him for 3 years or more now. Can't recall. Unfortunately some elderly people do develop laziness, or some other negative characteristic. My Mother-in-law constantly talks about her illnesses, non-stop. It is just an obsession with her.Hubby falls asleep whilst she is talking. How long has your Dad been so lazy? Is it because he is in any pain? Or he just doesn't want to try?

ooops! Oh dear - you would think he would have learnt wouldn't you? I think I would be cruel and put it out of his reach altogether, then he would HAVE to get up to switch it on and not break this one! Mind you I am very cruel and sadistic AGB! Yep I am still calling you Amazing Grandpa Bob - that is because i really do think you are amazing! Hugs xxx
