What exactly do YOU call a stocking stuffer?

I have wondered about this for quite some time. Around Christmas ads on TV try to get you to buy CDs at their establishment, and most of them encourage you to buy them for a great stocking stuffer. And I say, what? To me, a brand new released CD, even one that has been out a year or two, qualifies as a PRESENT because of the cost. I'm not putting 15 to 20 dollars on one stocking stuffer. Still others encourage us to get a 20 dollar gift card as a great stocking stuffer from their restaurant. Again I say what? To me that is a present. So is it just me? Am I the only one who considers things with that price as a present? Or do you guys have enough money, or at least spend that much money on stocking stuffers alone?

I totally agree! TO me, stocking stuffers are small fun things and snacks for the person. With maybe a 10$ gift to be the highlight. I did hint to my husband he can put a certain DVD in mine, but that was only b/c I didn't think he had a clue what to get me! If he doesn't do that, I won't miss it though. I plan to stuff his with candy, Slim Jims, altoids, stuff like that. And for the "10$" gift, some massage oil b/c he likes back rubs. 20$ Gift cards and CDs? Whatever happened to the good old days where you get socks! I looked up ideas for stuffers and found Ipods, mini-drives, and more expensive stuff like that. Just b/c it's small doesn't mean it's mean for a stocking!!

I agree a gift card or a cd to me screams present not stocking stuffer!

Hi AmbiePam:) I do not spend that much on stcking stuffers, haha.I put very small things in the socks like a tiny box of chocolate, earrings, nail kits, pencils&crayons&markers¬e pad(kids).Stuff like this.I thought stockings are for one small little gift that santa has left for a token of christmas and all the other biggies, big priced or not are by the tree, haha!!If i get something for this price,it is not for a stocking stuffer, its for a "main" gift for someone. Exactly. Sometimes I wonder what these stores consider a 'main' gift.

In my house stocking stuffers in total cost $20-$30 and are anything that will fit into a stocking LOL. Growing up my family would usually buy us presents and then in our stocking we got things like toothpaste and toothbrushes, Pens, gift cards, socks, an orange just about anything that fit and they were always stuffed to the max. This year my kids presents cost too much so they aren't getting a whole lot of stocking stuffers.

I think that a stocking stuffer is an appropriate gift for the person you are giving it to. It fits neatly into the stocking and is not messy. In other words, there is not much of a limit to what you can put in a stocking stuffer. You can even get a bigger or smaller stocking if you need to.

I think they are thinking the size rather than the cost. If its small enough to go into a stocking then *it must be a stocking stuffer* I think of a CD or a gift card as a gift. Heck, a diamond ring could fit in a stocking but I'd only give one to some one really special - and only put it in the stocking if its meant to be a surprise!

A stocking stuffer shoud be inexpensive and able to fit into the stocking, anything that meets those two requirements is a stocking stuffer in my book.

Stocking stuffers to me is things like trial size personal items, little things from the dollar store, snacks, etc. (it depends on the age also to me.) Because those are the type of things I put in my kids stockings. Like this year my 2 youngest kids are getting flash card, reading materials, a couple of little toys, ut mainly educational things.

Hi AmbiePam, I agree with you 100% on this one. To me a stocking stuffer is candy, christmas oranges, chocolate, little toys, and things like that. I don't think a gift card or a cd would classify as a stocking stuffer to me those are gifts as well! Hope you have a great Christmas! Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear.

baskets - Everyone likes these instead of stockings
I already spend enough on regular presents, and I've given up trying to find reasonable stocking stuffers. I used to be able to find small and inexpensive items to fill the stockings, but it's been years now since I've had stockings for everyone. Instead of stockings now, I make up gift baskets, and everyone loves them. I can put just about anything in them, and there are always surprises.

To me a stocking stuffer is something small in size and price. I usually put either an apple or an orange, a comic book, some little toys, a toothbrush, gum and candy. If I gave a CD or a $20 gift card that would be a present.:)

I never thought of comic books, good idea. My dad said if he got a stocking as a child, it had an apple, an orange, a candy cane, and some unshelled pecans.

You are right. My stocking stuffers are little things...like McDonalds gift cards or fishing tackle or some little thing for scrapbooking. A new CD would definately qualify as a gift in my house!

Yes I balance it off with dollar gifts....like a puzzle for my son from Michaels...a buck. And alot of the scrapbooking stuff is from the dollar part at JoAnn's...

Yeah, and how about commercials saying cell phones are great stocking stuffers?! When I think of stocking stuffers, I think of small things, like candies and gum and lotions or travel sized deoderants. Things like that. I mean, my mom and grandma have gotten me expensive things for stocking stuffers before, but I still get alot of little, practical things. My mom might get me single eye shadows or lip glosses. I am guilty of putting two gift cards in my hubbies stocking this year though, but for the most part, it's practical stuff.

I think it is more serious when people go very extravagant for children and teens. Stocking wise, of course. They start to expect things like phones in their stockings (which is nuts to me) and if the parent doesn't do something like that year after year, kids tends to get upset.

I go a story for you about stocking stuffers...I took down the stocking as usual and started to look inside and thinking nothing but candies and such would be inside it but then to my surprise I found a little box...I open that box...another little box...then another...then another...then down to the fifth box there was a pink cloth bundle up I opened it...I almost feel off my chair when I found a diamond ring heheh...

It those little gifts that you get not big ticket items. I think it's used as an marketing gimmick thes days.

Yeah, I would agree that it is a marketing gimmick. But they are nuts if they think most of us will buy into it! At least I hope people don't buy into it. : )

To me, stocking stuffers are those little things that you get that actually fit into the stocking...lip gloss, little goofy stuff, different little wrapped candies, and stuff like that. My family all buy the stocking stuffers at someplace like Family Dollar, the dollar Store, or someplace like that. I'm with you on the thought that spending bongo bucks on stocking stuffers is just nutz! A $15/20 gift is not a stocking stuffer (and if they were, a stocking could easily be worth more than a hundred bucks in a flash!!) No, it's not just you...I think it's more the retailers trying to make an extra buck calling them stocking stuffers because of their actual size (and not price.) My favorite stocking stuffer I got last year was a gag gift my one daughter got at the dollar store. It was called "grow a handyman". You stick this little blue 'man' in a jar of water and he grows 600 times the size he started out at. I live in a century home that always seems to need something repaired, so we had a good laugh over that one. (Too bad he didn't actually 'work' for real! hahaha)

That grow a handyman sounds so cute! Sometimes the silliest things are the most enjoyable. I think people can find great stocking stuffers at places like Family Dollar. Dollar Tree has some excellent ones as well.

To me, a stocking stuffer is a few 'small' gifts. I get decks of cards, lip balm, fingernail polish and such. I almost always get my stocking stuffers at a store like the Dollar Tree or Dollar General. I also put in small foil wrapped chocolates. My kids always save their stockings until the end and rave over them like they were as important as the gifts that they just unwrapped. I maybe spend $5.00 on each stocking including the candy. To me a stocking stuffer should be cheap, unless you are rich and that I am not (not even near it). LOL

The Dollar Tree is where I got my stocking stuffers this year. I couldn't get more than one thing per person, so I just got 4 stocking stuffers and put it in one stocking. I don't think they will mind. But the Dollar Tree has some really nice things. I get more excited about finding things for stockings than I do about finding main gifts. At least most of the time. : )

I reckon anything that can fit into the stocking would make an ideal stocking stuffer... even diamond rings. however, for us the stocking stuffers have always tended to be the little odds and ends things - the little bonus that the kids receive when they have settled down from openning their main gifts and then realize oh wait@@@@ we've got stockings too! this could be a piece of fruit, some candies, pens, pack of crayons, hotwheels type car etc etc. just fun little extras - not main event gifts.

No you're not the only one who thinks this way. To me anything over even $5.00 is a present/gift---for a stocking stuffer? Maybe some cute do-da from the dollar store..LOL..then who knows? Maybe I'm cheap? hehee

I have to agree with you. I consider a stocking stuffer to be in the price range of a $1 or less. Anything more than a $1 would be considered a gift to me. This year, I can't even afford stocking stuffers. I hope to be at a better place this time next year.

I say things from the Dollar Store or Target Dollar Spot - great stocking stuffers. Anything valued over a couple of bucks gets wrapped and under the tree!

The Target Dollar Spot is a good place to look, you're right. I forgot about that, but every time I go to Target I always check that out because they usually have something I can actually use.
