My favorite artist for sad music...

I tend to have playlists set up on my computer for various moods, and tonight I caught myself playing one called "Breaking" (yes I'm melodramatic). Anyway, I realized that over half the music on this playlist was by Sarah McLachlan. Songs like "Do What You Have to Do", "Adia", "Full of Grace" and others just fit my very darkest moments. Anyone else find themselves listening to Sarah McLachlan while depressed, hurting, or just sad?

I'm not a huge fan of Sarah but I know I listen to Fiona Apple when I am sad which is usually over a guy. Also A Perfect Circle.

I like A Perfect Circle too... Particularly the song "3 Libras". I'm checking out Fiona Apple as I comment on your post.. can you recommend a particular song by this artist?

I've listened to some Fiona Apple, but not recently. I'll have to dig up some of her stuff and listen again, now that I'm thinking about it! If I'm sad... it's usually for more than one reason at once. It actually kind of takes a lot to get me down, but since right now I have about fifty things going wrong in my life... yeah. Bleh.

I can say that " our sweetest song are those that tells of saddest thought" So I can say you felt correctly and you imagined correctly about saddest song !

Wow! Someone else does that too! In my Itunes I have different folders full of music dependent on my current mood. I have one full of 80s because that is the music era I love and is the best, and then I have folders for sadness, happiness, moody, mad and crazy even! One of my favourite tracks for when I am sad is the song on my profile Porcelain by Moby, enchanting lyrics. Now I come to think of it the sadness folder holds more songs than all the other mood folders oh boy!

Haha, yup I've been doing that for years! When I was younger I used to actually make mix CDs for each of my moods, but these days I do it via playlists on the computer instead. I have happy, sad, sappy, hyper, meditating, etc etc. :P I have to go find that song, because I'm curious! *makes mental note* My sad playlist is rather long too, but the "breaking" one is fairly short. I only give myself so long to be that far down... so I only allow a few songs on it so I have to replay, and by the time I'm sick of those songs my mood will have bottomed out and moved up to sad at least.

No, not Sarah M, but Jan Arden. She is much more melancholic. I can't get enough of those Canadian artists. Like the Cowboy Junkies. And don't forget Blue Rodeo. Getting off track a bit, but I find great energy in some of the saddest songs. You might try "I Want A Cure" by Rosanne Cash, if you are feeling bad.

Hmmm, now I have to find me some Jan Arden to test out your theory. You've given me quite a few ideas actually! Thanks! :) I find great energy in some of the saddest songs as well.

Apparently she's not quite as popular as I remember her being several years ago, because a lot of people said they didn't know her! Who are some of your favorite Chinese musicians? I'm always interesting in hearing other people's music as well! :)

I've never heard of this singer, but I'll try. Let's see how she is. I hope she isn't too sad because I usually listen to music to cheer me up, not the other way round *laughs*

Not all of her music is sad, she just has some very good sad music. :P If I listen to sad music when I'm already sad, I get this feeling of "bottoming out" my depression and then starting to move up the other direction and feel better.

Hi lecanis! I opened this discussion twice before and aborted the idea of responding for I do not know much about Sarah Mclachlan and I did not want to sound like a dumb. lol.. But this time, I couldn't resist myself. Given the kind of emotional, sensitive fool I am, I guess the singer would fit my genre of listening completely. Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts! I would like to listen to her. Let me grab one CD this christmas. Thanks.

Hi mimpi! Thanks for responding anyways! :) Sarah McLachlan is very good! When I first heard her years ago it was a music video of one of her songs already playing on my TV before I got back into the room after getting snacks, and I found myself running so that I could get to the TV and see the name of the artist before the video went off. I was that interested. I hope you find you like her when you get your CD.

I actually don't have playlists. Normally I listen to songs by certain bands or windows media player already set "types/genres" I don't listen much to sad music either, it's something that easily effects me and I tend to at times but I need to listen to up lifting songs and I really can't recall any which are sad. ~Joey

I haven't really tried the preset genres or types before. I'll have to look at that. I do sometimes listen to just one band, but more often it's the mood thing. I've just been doing that for years. *shrugs* If I listen to "uplifting" songs when I'm sad, they just annoy me. :P

Sarah Mclachlan's music is great.I love listening to her excellent voice.Yes, you're right she's melodramatic, and her music when she sang it comes from the heart. It doesn't make me sad or depressed but it invoked my emotions to sentimentality and reminiscing old emotional encounters, LOL.She had excellent several album like mirror ball and have been a guest in Santana's concert.

Yep, she's pretty great! :) It doesn't make me sad exactly, but it helps me when I'm already sad.
