World Population Issue... Get Rid of 1, 2 or 3 billion... Maybe More...?

Okay, before anyone gets the wrong idea the subject title is not at all what I think or believe. Let me explain this discussion. I remember seeing a mylot discussion that stated the world could not handle the current population as a whole and that it could only handle about 1 or 2 billion humans. I saw another discussion questioning birth rates and I took the time to explain some of what it all meant (and confirm the lower rates of several countries). I've also seen stories online ranging from people getting sterlized to control population for the environment... to people stating the world can only handle half or less of the current population...to people recommending drastic measures to barely satiate the entire populous.
What I ask of mylot is this. Do you personally think it is so bad? Are we in a crisis state? Has humanity reached a critical point of population? Have we reached a point of "harder" solutions? If not, please explain your views as you wish. Do you think it is bad and things should be done? If so, I'd like to see some thoughts, opinions, ideas on this. What about my ultimate premise for this discussion? Do you think eliminating some of the human populous is needed? What is enough if this is really the case?
1 million? 10 million?
100 million?
1 billion? 2...?
3...4...5 billion?!
Seriously, I'd like to see some discussion and some breakthroughs regarding this situation.

I really don't think it is necessary at this point to regulate the world population. I believe the Earth is good at regulating itself. We have people dying of starvation in places where famine and droughts are common...that tells me that the Earth knows not many people should live there. We have people dying in flooding and mudslides...again probably not the best place to live. We have diseases running rampant causing more deaths, another sign that certain numbers of people shouldn't be here. I think there's an evolutionary process to it all and we just have to accept it and go with it. Even if the overall population figure is increasing there are enough people dying off in the right places to ensure success for the greater majority. I think that's how it's supposed to work and that human intervention will have little impact on the intended results and may in fact impede the natural progress.

As I mentioned eariler, the issue of the Earth taking care of things naturally...that is something to consider. I don't fully subscribe to something like Gaia's Revenge, but many natural occurences happen that kill off people. Saddening but true. And you may have a point, humanity may not have that much of an impact on the planet as perceived.

I do not believe the world is over populated. There are plenty of resources to go around. True we waste more than we can imagine and use the resources foolishly. If we even found a way to distribute the resources equally I believe everyone will still have enough. Yes there have been declining birth rates for decades particularly in more industrialized nations.
There are also natural disasters, wars, disease, famine, accidents, etc that kill millions of people a year. I look at this as the natural way of culling the human herd. So there is no need to kill off additional humans because it's already being done continually.

You know this could really be an interesting discussion if more people from other parts of the world joined in. From the US point of view we could go on for a long time increasing in pop. without it hurting us at all but in other areas of the world they are already suffering horribly. I noticed that there might be a soilent green proponent among us, that is a little sick so is forcing people to be sterilized or to abort babies.
I do think that an effort should be made to inform people of alternative methods of birth control. Not to force anyone just to inform them. It also might keep down some of the unwanted diseases.
More needs to be done toward teaching better agricultural methods to third world countries and finding better sources of water for drinking and irrigation.
Actually, there is not a country in the world that is using their resources as efficiantly as the could be. We are as guilty as anyone else. And the US wastes more than they use. We should be setting a good example instead we are setting a deplorable example.

In actuality the repopulation rate for the US isn't spectacular (and from most of what I've read its repopulation and birthrates are more on the immigration side of the equation).
I know this discussion implies some sick items, that was the point. I would hope societies not employ what you've described here, but its very possible. Looking back on the discussion and seeing what's happened in the past six months I still think the discussion is valid. Countries are claiming food shortages and famines are hitting certain nations far worse than ever. The question of sustainability is still in the air, but the solutions still vary from person to person, organization to organization (or you just have talk and nothing even close to addressing the problem).
