In Hinduism, we often feed poor people as the last step of some of our rituals. This way the religion ensures social service through it. Similarly do you do any social service in the name of religion. Cheers! Ram

Islam encourages Charity, and helping needy. And those who have wealth, should give his 2.5% of annual earnings as obligatory charity to poor people around them (Zakat). On the day of Eid-ul Fitr, nobody should suffer from food, s o before that day, everyone having enough money or food should distribute main food grains/items to poor people. (2.5 kg for each family member). Charity and helping poor people has very much important in Islam, and it always promoted. There are several social service groups in different areas to help poor people by giving money, by doing free works, build houses, arrange a group marriage ceremony, etc.

I think both of you have given great examples of how each religion tries to bring in equality in the society. I think it is messages like these that get lost when people get into debates of which religion is better or which religion should others follow. I think at the bottom of every religion is a guidance to make the society better and if we are true to our religion we will respect this feeling of every religion and take it forward for the better of humanity. Cheers! Ram

I do social service because it is something I want to do, or because I feel it is the right thing to do. I don't necessarily equate it to my religion. We do tithe at church (which goes towards feeding the poor), but I do charitable works in addition to what we do at church.

That's good. If you really have a feeling to return back to society on your own, then that's creditable. For the lazier ones like me, we take the religious route!! Cheers! Ram
