it would definitely improve your english and your vocabulary. just be sure you have a pocket dictionary at hand every time you read a novel so if you come across an unfamiliar word, you can always look it up.

It definitely does. If you want to improve your English I highly recommend reading good books. It exposes you to a lot of conversation in the English language which will really be a good springboard for you in speaking that language. You will meet lots of words that are difficult to understand but don't be discouraged. Try to understand the meaning of the whole sentence or paragraph, not necessarily each and every word. Sometimes you have to get the meaning by context. Another way of improving your English is to watch a lot of good English movies. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Bookworm is very famous here in China, even kids buy the series. Because reading english novel will not enlarge your vocabulary but also teach you a very good lesson of english culture, which is obviously very helpful to english learning. Speaking of myself, i read many famous novels from the series'bookworm' those novels are simplified version for the beginners like me, i learned a lot, eading english novel helps improving my english somehow. : )

To answer your question, I would like to quote a little bit Francis Bacon. 'Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.' In his great article On Study, he further pointed out that 'reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man'. As an English major, I couldn't agree with him more. Indeed, you need a lot of reading before you can speak and write beautiful English. But to be cautious that some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.

I think any reading can only improve our English. Any literary work is good for increasing understanding and for developing expression

well, it somehow improve a person's english language...but that's not just it...a person have to look up on the dictionary what is the meaning of the words that confuse him...it won't be helpful that a person will read a novel and won't go through the meaning and proper usage of the words that he has read...
