Queen of the Trilogy

I have dubbed Nora Roberts the Queen of the Trilogy, because she does them so well. My problem is this: I don't mind reading a trilogy, but I hate the period between release of each installment. I just finished the first in her new series, Blood Brothers, last night, and it was OK. I would much rather read a Stephen King or Dean Koontz novel though. I think one of the things that makes Stephen King stand out is the fact that you get your money's worth when you buy one of his books. He takes care to flesh out his characters so that you can actually picture them in your mind's eye. This is not true of all writers. I have made a promise to myself that I will no longer buy books by writers who are stingy with their material, and don't care enough to flesh out the characters so that you get a good picture of them. I would rather wait until they come out in an anthology-which they invariably do. How do you feel about trilogies?

I like series, but I agree, I do hate the wait in between books.

I know it is all planned to build the suspense, kelly, but it really stinks, lol.

I don't mind trilogies, but like you I don't like to wait inbetween installments. I tend to wait until the whole set of books is out, then get them from the library. I rarely buy books because I read so much. Did you see the discussion I started about BookCrossing? If you love reading that might interest you!

I did see your discussion, blueunicorn, and I will check into it. I think I will stick to waiting until the entire series is out from now on. There is another trilogy I started reading-seems like a year ago-and finally got the second book recently. Guess I will have to wait another 6 months to find out how it all ends.

That's too long to wait between books. My problem is that I read so much that by the time the next book comes out if I've waited too long I can't remember exactly what happened in the last book. Then I have to re-read the last book, and that gets frustrating.

I'm with you in that I hate waiting in between installments; I end up needing to refresh my memory before I start the next one. I think that's because they don't flesh out the characters, as you said. I've read many Stephen King books that years later I still have a vivid memory of the characters. I definitely prefer his books to almost anyone else's, especially if I'm in the mood for that type of book. I must admit I haven't read many of Nora Roberts' book but I've seen quite a few of them when they were made into Lifetime movies...lol. Annie

Nora Roberts is an excellent novelist, anniepa, and a very successful one. I belong to a few book clubs and I can sometimes obtain a series by her through the bargain bin. It does require a wait, but I like the idea of saving money.
